New mATX build, Z77 + Ivy or Z68 + Sandy / What GPU?

Hi, smile.gif

After selling most of my sig rig and wanting to downgrade to an mATX, Air cooled PC with a lower power GPU, I now have two choices.

I can either go for:
  1. Asus Maximus IV Gene (Z68) + 2500k
  2. Asus Maximus V Gene (Z77) / ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional-M (Z77) + 3570k

Reason I chose those motherboards its because I want a black/red build.

Now, my gut it telling me to go Z77 because obviously the 3570k is 22nm, and a new generation/latest one, therefore more futureproof, but some people are telling me just to stick with Z68 and that Ivybridge is just a load of nonsense for no real benefit, bearing in mind Ivy will cost between £50 and £100 more depending on the CPU price when it's released tomorrow.

I'll be using 4GB of Dominator GT Hypers for RAM, if it makes any difference. (1600MHz @ 6-6-6-20).

What shall I do?

Now, onto my second issue of graphics. I did have a 5970, which was waaaaay overkill. Sure, it was cool, but a waste. All I play now is COD4 ProMod on my config which is mostly on low graphics anyway, Portal 1 & 2, and maybe some Batman: AA and Source Games (CSS/TF2). But, I want to be able to play upcoming games at a reasonable rate.

I don't want an old gen card, but a mid power new gen one, but I don't want to spend the earth, and it needs to be quiet. I'll be reusing my Gentle Typhoons from my old rig for CPU fan/Case fans, and I want the GPU to be as silent as possible too. And, just to make it a bit harder, I'd prefer red and black, or all black or all red. tongue.gif

Any suggestions?

Getting mATX is not a downgrade thumb.gif

I'd buy this (because I did) for a motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157294 (I know you're not in the States, but at least you can get info at Newegg).

Not Black and Red, but unless you have your board on the box, you wont notice anyway. Besides even if you can the only thing I can see/notice is the RAM, which you can get in Red anyway.

Unless you're running quad GTX 680s, you dont really need PCI-E 3.0/Ivy Bridge, so I'd just go with whatever CPU is cheaper.

I'd probably go for whatever is cheaper for the mobo and CPU, though it is always nice to have the latest and greatest...
As far as GPUs go, I'd suggest a Sapphire HD7850 depending on your budget, its a pretty decent choice for a midrange card at the moment.
Or this Asus one for full red and black theming -

I do prefer Sapphire for my AMD GPUs though. Either cards should be quiet, though I think the sapphire may be a tad quieter from reviews I have read.

Thanks CJ. I was looking at this, as I'd have a nice airflow through my case, but if I'm not mistaken, 6770 =/= 5770 which isn't enough grunt for me. frown.gif

For that price, just go for a HD 6850, it may struggle a little in some games with your U2711H though -
Sapphire
ASUS
I know they are not passive but they should be pretty quiet and relatively low TDP.

Found this: 3770k £248

According to that, pricing looks good, just a little more than the 2700k. thumb.gif

Yeah. I thought that too, but when I had a 5850 I could play every game I had on Med-High/High settings @ 2560 x 1440, cutting back on AA/AF and such. As I said though, I don't game much now. I think a 6850 would be enough, and I like the look of that directCU one. biggrin.gif

To be honest, I get the impression that you'd rather have something that you can build which does everything you need it to and looks awesome, so you can leave it alone for a couple of years without having to upgrade. For that reason, I'd say to go for Z77. Though the price difference could change things - if it's nearer £50, I'd definitely say go for it, whereas closer to £100, could still be worth it but obviously it's a harder decision to make.

For the graphics card, something with a DirectCU or DirectuCU II cooler might be good, because most of them have the same black and red colour scheme of the boards you want. Some do take up 3 slots, though you'd hope that means they'll be quiet really.

Power wise, maybe a 560Ti or 6870 or thereabouts? I'm not too familiar with what's needed to game at 2560x1440 though.

Thanks.

Just got a Asus DirectCU II 560ti for £136, so I'll use that. smile.gif

Leaning towards Z77 at the moment, seems like the logical choice, now I just have to decided between the Asus Maximus V Gene and ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional-M, thinking.gif

The Asrock looks better, but the Asus is a more reputable (I think) brand, although I've never liked how much they push the ROG thing. Then again, the ASRock is branded after a gamer....damn you marketing!

Nice one biggrin.gif

ASRock is, or perhaps was, a part of ASUS, specialising more towards the mainstream areas as opposed to high-end, but especially since Sandy Bridge this doesn't seem to be true anymore, I mean that motherboard is equally as high-end as the ASUS one from a quick glance.

Personally, I prefer the looks of the ASUS, and it has a less stupid name tongue.gif
