Linksys EA4500, plug in Ethernet cable not modem cable, possible ?

Thread Starter
Well, I just bought the EA4500, I'm just waiting for its delivery, I have a question to ask.

Do I just plug one of the ethernet cables coming out of my ADSL router into the "Internet" port on the back then what ? Do I adjust settings to enable it as an access point or leave it as it is ?

Forgive my ignorance as this is the first time I've bought a Wireless-Only router, my experience is with ADSL routers mostly biggrin.gif

Yeah if the modem you have is strictly a modem and does not have router capabilities, plug it into the Internet/WAN port on the router. Then boot up the router and it should guide you through the network setup for it.

You should be able to set up your WAN facing device into bridge mode, of which will simply maintain the physical layer of connectivity.

Then you would configure the ea4500 to handle the PPPoE session with your DSL credentials.

What I actually meant was, Can I use it strictly as an access point but still maintain the MAC Adress filtering and QoS features and create 2 separate SSIDs......etc

OK, thanks for reassuring me, what settings or whatnot do I have to enable to get it to work as an access point or Do I just plug in the Ethernet cable follow the Cisco Connect software then add the more advanced settings I mentioned earlier and that's it ?

Basically you just plug it in and follow the setup software. It will serve as an access point with router services. These settings such as DHCP and QOS should be enabled by default but you can configure it more once you have done the basic setup.

just one thing, go into the wireless settings in the firmware and secure or switch off "guest access" as i found out from neighbors that they could access my internet via Guest Access so check that it is secure if you want it or disable it smile.gif
