This is my current set up

System specs:

Intel Core i7 950(3.06GHz)
64 bit Quad-Core Processor
Asus Sabertooth X58 Motherboard
12GB RAM (6x2GB) DDR3 1333
1TB (1 x 1TB) SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 7200RPM HDD
2TB 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
GeForce GTX 680 2GB
750W PSU
120mm Liquid Cooling System


I want to upgrade my CPU and motherboard. I use my pc for 99% gaming and 1% video rendering (also watch movies listen to music and have pictures and stuff). I want the best quality for best price that is worth upgrading what I already have. I'm upgrading because 2 reasons: I did a prime95 blend for 5 minutes and my cores were hitting 100 celsius! also I just got a huge raise at my job so I'm going to sell the CPU & Mobo I have for new ones.

some one suggested i72600k-2700k and ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z

another friend of mine suggested saving my money and getting i5-2500k and ASRock Z77 Extreme4

please help!!! I definitely want a noticable upgrade from what I have and am willing to pay for it, but if I noticed that the processor I have's list price is more expensive than the i5-2500k. so is that even an upgrade? please help!!

I wouldn't worry about prime95. If I understand correctly that program cooks CPUs lol. How are your frame rates in games? Are you happy with them? If so, why upgrade? What kind of water cooling system do you have set up?

I have to say, if all you do is game then you won't be seeing a noticeable upgrade from that. What I would recommend is getting some more extreme cooling and taking that CPU to around 4~4.2GHz and get an SSD. That will keep everything running very smoothly, then when you do need to change out the CPU, it will all be re-useable.

As for the 2500K, for gaming, at high clocks, you might see a slight difference, but it probably wouldn;t be noticeable, the same goes for the 2600K/2700K, if you encode or do anything heavy like that then you would definitely notice going to a 3930K or something with 6 cores. But the 950 is still a very fast CPU.

Thank you so much, id rather not upgrade if I don't have to. But the problem is, I am a newb and I have NO IDEA how to oc the cpu.... i want to oc it to 4-4.2 like u said but im like brand new to this stuff, id have to start at the absolute basic, how do you suggest I learn to overclock it?

Edit and my frame rates with the 680 is lower than average (60 fps with drops to 50 very frequently on all ultra) feel like I should be getting at least 70.

Which games are we talking about here? Also, there are many guides for OCing that CPU, but first we need to take care of that temperature problem. There is no way you should be hitting 100c. What kind of cooling do you have? And could you post a pic of your setup inside your case?

Okay, right now I'm playing Battlefield 3 and Starcraft 2. But I plan on taking full advantage of my 680 and possibly buying a 2nd 680 maybe in like a year to go along with it and plan on buying and playing new games to come in the future...

I just ordered a new cooler master heatsink fan, its coming in the mail on tuesday (this one):

And I ordered 2 120mm fans to install, (right now I only have one and its crappy, im going to replace it and add a 2nd).

So, since i want to some what future proof my cpu and i use it for mostly gaming but also a little video editing/rendering I'm thinking the i7-2600k for the hyperthreading is a good pick ? am I wrong?

What kind of cooler is that that you've already got attached? It shouldn't be letting your CPU hit 100c! But yes, the 2600K will help in encoding and stuff with it's HT, although if you don't do much encoding, I think you would be better with saving some money. Unless you just have the upgrade itch, in which case I would say go for it! thumb.gif

In the meantime, you may want to check that the heatsink you've got there is properly mounted with enough thermal paste, because 100c sounds way off on that CPU with that cooler!

I don't know what the cooler is, it was stock that came in a prebuilt pc. but yeah im getting like 80celsius at 50% load which i know is bad....

and in conclusion i ordered the i5 - 2500K with 8 gigs of 1866mhz g.skill ram on a ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 mobo
