$25 for the fan plus $9 shipping or $34.

They're a tad less over at Xoxide. Around $28-29 including shipping. smile.gif

Would you do this for anything an individual would send you?

Say fans, rads, pumps or what not?

I have in the past, heck I even used to "Borrow and Ship Back" stuff, but I've had bad experiences with that such as Naekuh's RD30 that had a foot get broken in shipment to me. Eventually I cut off the "Borrow" and only did that if I get to at least keep the samples. But...this last year I was inundated with "Prototype" testing for people. All in all I tested over 17 CPU blocks, but only a few of those were retail review samples that I got to share testing on. I was basically doing free R&D work for manufacturers, so I'm putting a stop to that as well. Havn't started yet, but I probably will be doing more prototype testing, but on a paid basis. My time has got to be worth something..

This is a bit different. I'm looking to taper back on work so I can finish building my buggys and spend more time outdoors this summer. But...I haven't done much with fans for a while, so this is something a little different than the routine and getting really boring now radiators/blocks, etc. I heard a bunch of people ask to have the fan tested and it's a pretty quick and easy one to do. It really only takes me about 30 minutes one night to run a fan with another for comparison, so the time commitment is small. Radiators and Blocks however are very time consuming. It's fairly typical to require logging temps for 6 hours or more.

So I guess the answer is mostly no, but I'm willing to make exceptions if it's an easy thing to do and highly requested or if it's sponsored or if I'm just generally interested. I've been interested in finding good fans for a long time now and this one has quite a bit of hype behind it without any real testing to back up that hype...it has my interest..smile.gif

I had no clue you were paying out of your own pocket for all of this stuff you are testing! eek.gif

Most members fans, radiators and water blocks are purchase because of your tests, my decisions are based on your hard work! It's time for manufacturers to step up and show a little gratitude!
I always thought you got sponsored for doing the tests that seems a bit unfair. But I will say you are good a forum myth and marketing busting.

I think I may sponsor you to test some or all of the fans that Cougar had to offer, I want to see if they are full of it or truthful.

Thanks for your work thumb.gif

Thanks!

No, I have never been sponsored for my time.

I do get samples sometimes for testing, but I only accept that when I can get samples from several manufacturers to eliminate any perception of bias. Then I am stuck in the middle to produce a fair test for all of them. But it has always only been a sample which honstly has little to no value for me. When I started this I initially tried to sell old samples but if you take something like a $80 block and use it for testing, you will be lucky to get $40 out of it. Ialready spend a good 6-7 hours testing the stupid thing, add another 3 hours to write up the review and do photos, now add another few to try and list the thing on ebay, wait in line at thepost office to ship, and I have about 14-16 hour invested in $40. Needless to say a career in delivering papers looks good incomparison. I don't even bother with the sample selling piece much any more and usually give them away as I get more value out of that. I also keep many of the better performing samples for future testing and because I'm a bit of a water cooling parts hoarder I guess.smile.gif

Anyhow, my time, my hardware which is often damaged from testing (I lost three motherboards now from CPU block testing among other various bits of hardware that went poof!), all the testing gear, my website, and at times the parts being tested are all donated by myself. I do occassionally get some help from forum members like this and previous fan testing for the parts being tested, but never anything more than the sample. I have never been sponsored for my time and I am an engineer with a good job. I think I have always done this because its something different that can be challenge to do, it is scientific, I get to use excel like some science geek, I do like the hobby, and it helps other people which is worth more than money.

The hard part is dealing with more requests than I have time for and complaints. There just isn't enough time and people do complain about anything and everything, it is just human nature. I used to also donate time to the manufacturers doing free prototype testing, but that has come to an end. Some of them were simply taking advantage of me providing free R&D and then didn't even show any thanks or appreciation for my donating my time for them. I have closed the door on that though, no more free prototype testing.

Anyhow, I donate my time toward this because I'm sick in the head, I like excel and most things computer relate, and like helping people.thumb.gif

PM sent for another round of community sponsored fan testing..smile.gif

This should open up some eyes. Well at least to those that complain about your work.

Thanks Martin, I now appreciate every bit of info you deliver even more.

Did you ever "ask" for compensation when doing prototype testing?
