xSlimmer

Is there something like this for Ubuntu?

Basically what xSlimmer does is it removes unnecessary code from fat binaries, and strips out unneeded languages.

Not as far as I'm aware as users who really care about that would compile their own binaries.

If you don't mind me asking, why would you want such an app?

that's like using a hammer for a screw and is in general a pretty lousy idea ... use a source distro if you're interested in what machine code is executing

The performance increase you'd get from that would be minuscule and certainly less the boost you'd get from compiling your own programs in source based distros such as Gentoo.

What you're after is completely backwards - you're trying to take one of the heaviest Linuxes and slim it. when in fact you should be taking a minimal distro and building it up (eg Arch > nlite) or even compiling your own sources (eg Gentoo > xSlimmer). The only reason things like nLite and xSlimmer has a place on Windows is because Windows is pretty inflexible so you have to reverse engineer solutions rather than installing things correctly to begin with.

It's the same problem with OS X though. Apple give this impression that they support open source when in fact they just hoover up open technology and then redistribute closed binaries.

Gonna agree with lloyd and plan9 here. Not worth it.
