Upgrading my buddy for his birthday

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I wan't to throw a friend of mine some new parts for his computer and was wondering if this would be worth MY money and his time.
Currently he's sporting an Intel e6550 and an old NVIDIA 8800.

I wanted to get him up to a e6850 so he's around 3.0ghz for gaming, and buy him a new AMD 6850. I know the card would make a difference, but would swapping the processor do much for him? I'm typically an AMD guy and I know that when I swapped out my quad core 2.3ghz proc for a 3.2ghz proc on a previous build, I seen a nice increase in performance. Would it do the same for him with his chip?

Thanks

what motherboard does he have? what cooling is he using. You might be able to get him a core 2 quad on the cheap if you look around. That would improve his system a lot if you got the right one.

can you give us more info about his current rig. That will help us tell you good options for the best possible upgrade for a decent price.
Swapping the CPU would do little to nothing for him. If you really want him to see a difference, get him a quad core (Q6600/Q8400), upgrading from a dual core to another dual core is just not worth it.

The GPU upgrade is a great idea. You could even get him a 6900 series if you bought second hand.

Correction, swapping from a dual core to another dual core of the same generation will do almost nothing. Switching from an e6550 to an i3-2120 would blow his socks off. Secondly, GPU upgrade is not a great idea if you are not going to upgrade the cpu. the e6550 will bottleneck a 6870 and chances are the e6800 won't be a lot better. Will it be noticeable? Depends on what he's doing. basically, i'd spend the extra money and just get him a cheap cpu/mobo upgrade and a new gpu unless you can get the e6800 for like, 40$.

That's the problem, he wont tell me. ;-) It was pulling teeth trying to get him to tell me what processor he had so that I could find something in the same socket lol.

Good to know on the CPU swap. I'll have to see what the difference in price is for a quad. I want to keep the whole upgrade under $200 if possible.

here is a platform upgrade you to do for him
It would blow his setup away on every level.

Yeah, I would love to do exactly that for him. Unfortunately that's way over my budget, for a friends birthday. Not to mention my fiance would probably kill me in my sleep. I'm looking at the best bang in performance for him as well as for my buck. $200 is my max if it's absolutely brilliant, but $150 or less would be better on my pocketbook.

Thanks for that insight though!
