Today, I found a Samsung F3 Spinpoint that was left unused.
My second rig runs on a Caviar Blue 640GB, so I thought the spinpoint would be a minor upgrade.

So I put it in my system for testing and I found this :
I arranged the pics Spinpoint first, Caviar Blue second.

Spinpoint F3 (left) - Caviar Blue (right)

I set it at 40GB short-stroke, because I don't use any more HDD space.

Anyway,
I thought it was odd that a HDD that was supposed to compete with Caviar Blacks was atleast equal to a Caviar Blue.

I guess I'll be selling my spinpoint soon.

It looks to me like that Spinpoint is on its last legs, check out that huge initial dip starting out, HDD's are supposed to start out strong and go down as they go, not the other way around

That's what I thought, but I asked my dad and it was basically, bought last year and never used.

Yeah not much of a factor in that though, i've seen too many drives drop dead quickly after looking like that :-\

It's just a quirk of that particular size and test. I have a Hitachi drive that does the same. (goes up slightly after an initial droop)

I'd try messing with the testing block size and accuracy in HDTune's settings.

The WD Blue is faster because it's larger. Those drives seek at roughly the same speeds, so 20% into one should be pretty close to 20% into the other.

The problem is, 20% into the Samsung is 50GB, while 20% into the WD is 128GB. If you did a 50GB test on the Samsung and 128GB test on the WD, you'd probably get similar access times.

But why bother? You only need 40GB, and the WD Blue is definitely faster when dealing with that smaller amount of data.

I'll redo the tests a few times on that spinpoint, I want to make sure that I'm not selling a broken HDD to someone.

So I did some tests and I'll definitely be contacting the retailer :

I suppose the drive was either dropped during shipping, or already damaged when leaving the factory.

I highly doubt it was the latter.

UDMA CRC errors usually indicate a bad cable. Well, that or a dying SATA controller - either on your motherboard or the drive. Bad cable is most likely.

Ow wow, that's srsly bad.

I did have a bad cable, it wouldn't even recognize the HDD anymore, so I threw it away.
