Can't install Windows XP?

Thread Starter
I am trying to install WIndows XP on my netbook, but when I boot up the text based setup, only my flash drive is recognized. My hard drive has 3 partitions: 1gb swap file, 9gb for Ubuntu, ~140gb for Xubuntu, and 30gb unallocated that I want to use for XP, in that order according to GParted. Would I have to move the partition I want for XP to the front of the hard drive?

Windows won't recognise the linux partitions that are presumably EXT3/4 or similar. Although this shouldn't stop it seeing the un-allocated space. I would try creating an NTFS partition in the unallocated space using GParted and run the windows setup again.

Just a note, you will have to re-install grub (or whichever boot manager you're using) after you install windows as windows will overwrite it and you won't be able to boot linux.

How do I reinstall Grub? also, I still can't get it to recognize my drive after creating an NTSF partition.

You can do it from a live CD by running a few commands. It's not difficult and there are plenty of guides around.

I'm afraid I don't know why windows does not see your drive.

Do you have a guide for reinstalling grub2 from Ubuntu 11.10?

So does that mean I have to use IDE mode from not on? I kinda screwed up my grub2, so I want to do a complete format of my hard drive. I didn't do anything in Ubuntu or Xubuntu besides install some programs and add some bookmarks, so it won't be too hard to get my system back to the way it was. Is there any way to install in AHCI?

Check the manufacturers site to see if there are any drivers for your board you can download to install during the winxp setup. Like when you install raid drivers before you install the OS.

Here is the driver page for my netbook. Can someone tell me which AHCI driver to use and how to install the driver before installing windows? Keep in mind I am using WinToFlash.
