If GTA5 is anything like GTA4 was... CPU, not GPU will tend to be the limiting factor. The only thing that might hurt you is the 768 or 1 GB vram on your 460 GTXs. Low Vram wasn't good for Metro 2033 either... nor is low clock speed.

Is the 460 GTX SLI setup a hold over from an earlier build? I have the same thing in 768 MB and they're alright for my 1680x1050 I do... but I'm going to go at least 1.5 GB on my next GPU in the next ~ 6 months. Between Witcher 2, Metro 2033 and a few others... 768 just doesn't seem to be hacking it. For what little more a 3570k would be out of pocket... I'd go w/a CPU that can clock better and give you a quite a bit more headroom down the road. You'll probably replace GPUs at least once in the life of a 1155 build, realistically. I'd be nice to have a CPU that you can stick w/through it's life.

Given the choice, I'd go 3570k, if the 460 GTXs are hold overs... keep them until the 670 or 660 come out and ebay them and replace them for 1 660/670 similar or better performance, less power draw and probably 1/2 again to twice the vram... and then snag another one a little while later when their price falls. Have done the same w/260 GTXs and 460 GTXs w/great results for little money out of pocket. Selling a G80 8800 GTS for the 260 cost me ~50 out of pocket. I got a refurb for SLI for ~130 6 months later. When the 460 GTXs came out and hit their first sales, I ebayed the 260s separately, then bought the 460s, sold the game codes that came w/them. Final cost was about ~50 out of pocket.

Take my/nvidia recommendations w/a grain of salt. I'm unfamiliar w/ATI products and they may have competing products at the same price points that are superior. I just tend to stick w/Nvidia because they're worked consistently and I like the bells and whistles they have ATI lacks... and I don't do Eyefinity.

there are a lot of question within your question that you dont ask !will you be live streaming while gaming(sending your achievement live on the web for all to see)will you use skype while this is going on?will you have an irc chat going on also!my take on this is to use an opencl solution like arcsoft.so it will use gpu mostly and a bit of cpu!this way cpu become more of a fetcher then actually do anything!and in this aspect, yes your idea is great!if you plan to use a nongpu solution to stream!then you might have to forget streaming!1080i is a great way to compromise in view!and viewer will still be able to view your stream!in fact nobody should go past 1080i even if they have quad sli system!

like i said this is my point of view and tv industry does the same not many go 1080p not because they cant!but the web cant!even if you dont stream it is still better to use 1080i!you ll notice a difference only in big screen!

Again... are you buying the 460s or are they hold overs? They're kind of older cards to be buying new now, IMO... even if they're decent still. With the release of the 680, the 580s price should be dropping out. A single 580 and 2 460 GTXs are roughly equivalent.

How much are 2 460 GTXs w/2GB vram running you for the pair?

charleswrivers:

the price of 1
msi gtx460 2G
106$ each!!
=
212$ Sli

the price of the shappire 7950 3g is
=
520$

but he stronger then the Sli and dont have the Sli issues and he can support all the games and have a option to CF with another in the futuer
so i dont know what will be a better and smarter buy ]=

drbaltazar :
this is the gtx 460 setup:

CUDA CORES - 336
GRAPHICS CLOCK - 650 MHZ
PROCESSOR CLOCK - 1300 MHZ
TEXTURE FILLRATE - 36.4 Gtexel/s
MEMORY - 2048MB
MEMORY WIDTH - 256bit
MEMORY CLOCK - 1700 MHZ

and this is the 7950 setup:

GPU
810 MHz Core Clock
