I wish the availability of Keplar was better, it would drive the prices down on the 7950 pretty quickly I'm sure - A month after I buy I'm going to watch the price drop like a rock. AMD is charging a premium for their high end cards while they can still get away with it, even though it's really not much better than 1 yr old tech overall from Nvidia's GTX 580, Nividia is also milking their prices up until the very last moment - and now they're competing with themselves for the time being.

You are incorrect in saying HD 7970 is not much improvement over GTX 580. HD 7970 is a fantastic product with amazing OC headroom. It scales beautifully too with clock increase. To really appreciate its superiority take the most demanding games

Battlefield 3 2560 X 1600 Ultra 2X MSAA
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/02/08/gigabyte_radeon_hd_7970_oc_video_card_review/6
HD 7970 1Ghz is 35% faster than GTX 580 at 2560 X 1600 Ultra 2X MSAA . When voltage OC to 1.3 Ghz the perf diff is a staggering 60%

Metro 2033 1080p with DOF and AAA

HD 7970 1Ghz is 35% faster than GTX 580 at 1080p
http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-7970-overclock-guide/12
HD 7970 (1125 / 1575) is almost 50% faster than GTX 580. At 1.25 Ghz it would be more than 60% faster.

Alan Wake 2560 X 1600 4XAA

HD 7970 at stock is 50% faster. At 1070 Mhz its more than 65% faster

Crysis 2 2560 X 1600 DX 11 Ultra (High res textures) 4X MSAA
http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-radeon-hd-7970-review/21
http://www.guru3d.com/article/asus-radeon-hd-7970-directcu-ii-review/23
1 Ghz HD 7970 is above 35% faster than GTX 580. A 1.25 Ghz HD 7970 is more than 50% faster.

Witcher 2
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/53263-msi-hd-7970-lightning-3gb-review-15.html
HD 7970 at stock is close to 40% faster. HD 7970 (1070 Mhz) is close to 45% faster. A 1.25 HD 7970 will be easily 50 - 55% faster

Other than Metro 2033 all the other games released in the last 12 months. These are the most demanding games. So I would consider them most relevant. HD 7950 is less than 5% slower than HD 7970 at the same clocks. So the above results won't change much. The HD 7950 is a fantastic card at USD 400 - 410. If you fancy OCing the HD 7950 at 1.1 Ghz will win more games than lose against GTX 680 . At 1.25 Ghz same against GTX 680 OC. All of this for 100 bucks lesser. can't get any better than that smile.gif

You missed what I said " HD 7950 is less than 5% slower than HD 7970 at the same clocks. ". If you are gonna OC (esp with extra voltage ) the HD 7950 is truly the best enthusiast card from a maximum bang for the buck perspective. smile.gif

It's not that big of an improvement especially when you look at the min FPS. I agree that the average and max FPS is higher, and that the 7950 is at a good price point and uses very little power compared to a 580 - there are improvements.. I think they're slight though, especially given the year's time between their release dates.

Also when you say "faster" I agree, it is "faster" but when it comes down to playing games and looking at FPS it's just not that huge of a deal anymore. I'm not denying the 7950 is an excellent card and improvement.

How do you say min fps did not improve. If you had a look at the BF3 fraps graph at Ultra 2x MSAA. there is a 40% improvement from 23 fps to 32 fps min when you compare GTX 580 to HD 7970 .

In fact the HD 7970 OC (1.3 Ghz) had a 31 fps min at Ultra 4X MSAA compared to GTX 580 which had a 23 fps min at Ultra 2x MSAA . Thats is some serious shading and bandwidth power at work. thumb.gif

Witcher 2 has a 40% improvement in min fps at 2560 x 1600. The other games do not have min fps in the scores. But I can bet there would be a 40% improvement in min fps, in fact sometimes more than that. These are significant improvements. You have to understand all of this was achieved on a brand new 28nm process compared to a mature 40nm process. Do you remember the issues the GTX 480 had and how it required GTX 580 to correct things. The Nvidia GK110 aka GTX 780 and AMD HD 8970 will be on a mature 28nm process and will be close to 70 - 80% better than GTX 580. But you have to wait till year end for that. So enjoy the HD 7950 OC. smile.gif
