OK sound addicts, need some suggestions and an education on gaming headphones...

hey guys, so heres the run down. i have a set of 5.1 speakers in my room and just moved to a new place with my girlfriend. shes constantly complaining that i play my games wayyyy too loud. ive decided to pick up a set of headphones, but i am totally confused because of all the available options and features. im almost always playing on my 360 in my free time, so hardcore gaming is of utmost importance.

what im looking for is some education and, more importantly, suggestions on a nice set of gaming headphones.

id really love to buy a pair of 5.1/7.1 headphones, but from the information ive collected, apparently the 5.1/7.1 surround in gaming headphones are completely useless. can anyone confirm or deny that? ive also heard a lot about this whole "sound stage", "positional audio" and "impedance", all terms i am not too familiar with. anyone mind giving me a bit of education on all of this?

oh, and before i forget... biggrin.gif

1.State your budget! (Set an absolute maximum or give a relative maximum with + x amount if it will be amazingly better).
my budget is going to be $250 max, but id be willing to hit the $300 mark if the pair is significantly better

2.State your music tastes
sort of irrelevant considering these will be used for hardcore gaming. my skull candys do just fine for music.

3.State what perks are highly desirable (low impedance, heavy bass, excellent for gaming etc..)
excellent for both 5.1/7.1 gaming and bass. again, the 5.1/7.1 is dependent on if it truly produces surround sound.

4.State what products you already have and are planning on using with your recommended item (state whether you have an amp if you're looking for headphones with high impedance for example)
none i think? but ill list the stuff ive been looking at and try to get all of your opinions on it. i know the gaming brands are apparently a gimmick, but theyre the only ones ive heard of.

ive been eyeing the razer tiamat 7.1 but unfortunately theyre pc only, so i guess thats ruled out.
turtle beach XP500 (wired or wireless makes no difference) and the DPX21
tritton AX720
astro A40's

i also saw a pair of psyko headphones that ive never heard of, but theyre supposed to be the closest youll get to true surround, but im pretty sure theyre pc only mad.gif

i think all, if not most of, these are going to be surround. again, not sure if the surround is even relevant.

5.State how you are going to use the item (e.g. out-and-about, at the gym, at home, PC / console, gaming, music etc). The more detail in this, the better.
home, gaming on my 360.

USA.

i dont know much about headphones, but i do know that 5.1/7.1 is a gimmick (when it comes to headphones) and actually contributes to lower sound quality.

not really; audiophiles refer to something they term "soundstage". basically you get the surround effect with only 2.1 real channels. in a nutshell, the drivers are built in such a way that depth of sound can be imitated. i have no idea how it works, but if an audiophile tells you that a set of headfi's have good soundstage, thats what it means.

positional audio is the idea of imitating a full environment of sound using a speakers/headphones. better positional audio allows you to better identify exactly where in 3d space around you a sound is coming from. surround is one way to achieve this, but good headfi's will use alternate methods to use only 2.1 channels to produce great soundstage and, as a result, positional audio.

you can use most "PC" headphones with the 360; you just need an adapter. http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Adapter-3-5mm-Jack-Plugs/dp/B000A3GPIS/

since no one else seems to be responding to this, i'll go ahead and give a recommedation:

Audio Technica ATH-AD900

these headfi's are great with or without an amp (which, since you will be using them primarily with a 360, will not be available). they are also supposed to be some of the most comfortable available, perfect for long gaming sessions.

and they have great soundstage, which is important to you.

if you want something a little bit cheaper, grab a set of ATH-AD700's, which are about half the cost but most of the quality. these will also be very comfortable and have good soundstage. be sure to pick up the open-back version (they have metal mesh instead of a solid back) because they will have better soundstage.

good luck thumb.gif
