Problem: BIOS Post and Windows start comes out one video card, Windows log in comes out another..

Hi All,

I've been having this problem I changed my SLI set up to 2 GTX 580's and placed one of the GTX460's I was previously using in SLI to a dedicated PhysX card. The Bios post and Windows start up screens both come out of the 460. The Windows log in screen and Windows then come out of the top 580. This gets really annoying when trying to set up an overclock, as I have to move the cable every time I restart. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Yeah not really the right forum, but ... it's sorta video card related, so ... I'll let it stand.

So ... explain your configuration ... what board do you have, and how do you have the cards arranged in the PCI-Ex slots, top to bottom? Does your bios have an option to choose the primary PCI-Ex slot for video?

I would think the way you'd want to do this is have one of the 580's in the top-most slot, with the monitor plugged in to that card. If the 460 is top-most in the board, that could cause the issue you're having.

And what happens if you swap the slot position of the 460 with the top-most 580 (just for testing purposes)?

Hey Brettjv, thanks for responding. My first post and I guess I'm kind of lost. First things first: I filled out my rig on my profile but it's not in my sig. How do I fix that?

Did you go through all the 5 'steps' needed to complete the process (push Skip for the stuff you don't want filled in)?

If that's not fixing it, I'm not sure offhand what is the problem.

My rig's been untouched since the Site's platform change (to Huddler) so if there's some special thing that needs doing to 'enable' a Rig in one's signature nowadays, I'm not aware of it, and I see means by which to toggle a Rig as being shown/not shown.

Perhaps others will chime in with something I don't know about thumb.gif

If you filled your rig, on your profile page go down at "Your Forum Signature" and click on "Edit Signature Text".
An editor with 3 list boxes will appear below it will appear, select your rig on the first list box and click submit.

For your problem now, do what brettjv said.

Your BIOS might have an option to pick the primary graphics adapter. If not than your manual might have some info on which PCIe slot is the main one.

The card that shows the bios screen is considered to be the primary card, so the fist thing to do is to put the correct card in the correct PCI-e slot. It is the card that will show the boot screen.

The second thing to consider is the primary port on that card. The primary may be defined in the user manual, or you can fid out which one it is by plugging in two monitors into the card and seeing which one shows the BIOS screen. This primary port will also show the windows logo while booting, but NOT necessarily the login screen when two monitors are connected. When you have only one monitor, it will display on it, regardless of if you plug it into primary or secondary port.

The windows primary monitor is determined in display settings. Usually it is the one that has no option to extend or make it primary and the one that shows the login screen. Default is usually the primary card on the primary port, but it may switch around if the driver tells it otherwise. To switch manualy, make another monitor primary. The trick to swap it, if it is wrong, may be to connect a second monitor. The goal is to enable all monitors and select the desired one to be primary. The way to do it may be a bit different depending on your version of windows.
