But on the positive side, from what has been reported, this isn't a cripple like the GTX590 so in some ways it could actually prove to be reasonable value.
Lets just hope they didn't skimp on the vrm's this time so that people can actually push these cards thumb.gif

$1200?! And the REST! We already pay $200 extra for a 680! Im thinking at least $1300, but more than that wouldnt surprise me either...

Nowhere is it being billed to outperforming 2x GTX 680s.

It literally has the same components as 2x full-fledged GTX 680s, minus the need to be plugged into two different PCI-E slots and needing to feed two circuit boards.

I'm going to post this again:
Quote:
The GTX 690 is powered by a total of 3,072 NVIDIA CUDA® cores, all working to deliver awesome gaming performance for ultimate gaming setups. Designed for the discriminating gamer and ultra-high-resolution, multimonitor NVIDIA Surround™ configurations, the GTX 690 delivers close to double the frame rates of the closest single GPU product, the GTX 680. Plus, it is more power efficient and quieter when compared to systems equipped with two GTX 680 cards running in NVIDIA SLI® configuration.

I see you have 2x GTX 680s, so I can see why it might seem like you need a reason to say that the cost isn't justified - but it's not being billed to outperform your setup. It is being billed to equal your setup while consuming less power and being a bit quieter due to the nature of it being on a single PCB. That, and requiring less slots for multi-GPU configs, needing one less water block for H2O cooling, etc., are going to be the selling points of this.

It's also reasonably easier to quad-SLI down the road, without needing a quad-SLI capable mobo for 4x individual 680s. They also mention that its power-efficiency is actually better than two individual GTX 680s in SLI:

Also, this is straight up 2x GTX 680 performance in one card, all cores, etc., enabled, so i'm not really sure why people are shocked at the price tag....
2x GTX 680 = $1,000
1x GTX 690 (1x GTX 680 + 1x GTX 680) = $1,000
Makes sense to me!
I'm buying one the day it's available, even if it means i have to stay up all night to troll the various e-tailers...this was the upgrade I was looking for for my GTX 590! thumb.gif

Still. The normal benefit of a dual gpu card is that it is cheaper than buying 2 of the cards. Seems like they're closing off most of the market for a few corner cases.
In progress.

It will most likely performance worse then two GTX 680's in SLi. Their hasn't been a dual GPU card that has performed better then two single cards in SLi or Crossfire. I expect it to sell for $900 so you save $100.

Making it $100 cheaper would definitely open it up to a much wider audience.

Nvidia doesn't usually release a dual-GPU card consisting of their top-tier single-GPU card though. Even the GTX 590 was limited via the power phases and subsequent clock speeds, which is why it was cheaper than outright buying 2x GTX 580s.

They usually release dual-GPU cards with near-high-end card specs, like the GTX 295 for example, which was essentially 2x GTX 275s as opposed to being 2x GTX 285s.

This would be the first time that they are literally able to fit in an architecture's entire, full-fledged chipset onto a single PCB and attain similar performance without compromises, hence the equal price.

And again, there are the subtle selling points like it being a single card and needing less slots, being more power efficient and quieter because it's a single PCB, etc. etc.

Shameless plug here, but I was telling a lot of people they were holding back on GTX 680 supply because of the GTX 690, and it turns out I was actually correct. thumb.gif

Are you going to let the other GPU fry, I don't think so!
