I posted something in the Titan's thread and allow me to show the GTX 690 thread some love too... smile.gif

Tweaker Turns GeForce GTX 690 Into a Quadro K5000

Quote:
When you buy GeForce GTX 690, the most expensive dual-gpu graphics NVIDIA has in their offer, you expect the best performance and every feature enabled. Well this is actually true, however it does not support the same technology as it’s professional counterpart Quadro K5000.

If the GeForce could be modified into Quadro, you would save $1000. A member of the EEV Forums did just that, because his GeForce GTX 690 would support NVIDIA Surround (multi-monitor technology) in Windows, but it would not support Mosaic in Linux, which is exclusive technology for Quadro series. What is worth noting is the fact that NVIDIA Quadro K5000 is a single-gpu card, clocked lower than 690.

In order to understand how this modification works, we have to bring up few facts. In the past it was actually very easy to modify GeForce cards into Quadro (and opposite), by changing the hardware straps on the board. These straps control the PCI Device ID, which carries the information what card is connected to the slot. So if you knew the codes for each card, you could manipulate them to emulate specific model of the card. However NVIDIA changed the way to control the ID. To change it on the GTX 690 it requires some modification to the board itself. By changing the analogue values of certain components we can manipulate the ID. The modder gave us a whole list of values corresponding to specific codes:

5K = 8
10K = 9
15K = A
20K = B
25K = C
30K = D
35K = E
40K = F

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 has an ID of 0×1188, while Quadro K5000 has 0x11BA and Tesla K10 0x118F. Long story short, it equates to 20K and 15K resistors to be enabled in order to change 690 into K5000, whereas it requires 5K and 40K resistors to transform it to Tesla K10. And that’s it. He posted few images for verification. The story does not say however, if the card is now operating with only one GPU or two. It surely does trick the NVIDIA’s X Server, which now reads the code as K5000/K10. Other users suggest that the same way can be applied to GeForce GTX 660Ti/670 to transform them into 680. It would technically just change the name in the NVIDIA Control Panel (not verified). Of course this method will work with the GeForce GTX Titan into Tesla K20 mod as well.

NVIDIA did not comment on this story, instead they deleted the thread regarding this tweak on their official forums (made by the same user). Keep an eye on the thread below.

This is why I keep my 3rd monitor away from my primary two. Keeps me from surround gaming which eventually would turn into another watercooled 690 or sli Titans, I'd also then invest in smaller bezel screens, lightboost capable, the whole nine, weirdsmiley.gif

Only way I would move to a Titan is if I would buy two Titans SLI. I'm not about to spend $2000 on GPU's. Spent my money this year on some audiophile gear and new monitor already. End of year looking at either two new singles aka 780/8970 or maybe another dual GPU like a GTX 790. smile.gif

Edit: Benchers are eating the Titans up right now. wink.gif

That is exactly my problem, i do play mostly in surround view, and even 3D surround view for those few games that supports it.

and when those games runs, the FPS is very close indeed to the benches shown in TechPowerUp rewview http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_Titan_SLI/

I really like my dual GTX 690, but the performance is kind of mediocre considering i paid $2000 to get the top of the line gear last December.

and 2 Titan on SLI seems to be easily eating the 690 for breakfast most of the time.

after checking out that review, i understood better how pointless was to have a Quad or Tri SLI with the GTX 690

and for the same money i can get a better bang for the buck with just 2 Titan

I was seriously thinking about SLI Titans but for the money it would cost me, i think im going to wait till Nvidia's 800series maxwell cards, but dam its looking farther and farther away seeing how they haven't even launched the 700series...

Pulled a rookie mistake (doh.gif) and forgot to plug in the auxiliary power sata connector to the mobo. Some how i left it out when redoing my midplate or I may have tossed out the sata cable i had for it. Anyways, read JimmyD's thread on his lack of performance with two 690s and he found out he was missing the auxiliary power cable too. I did have mine w/ the 580s but I just forgot to plug it back in. Or, must have left it out when i was messing around with the 670 and 7970. Anyways. Usage is pegged @ 99% on all four cores and vram usage has dropped to 1.8-1.9 gb (from pegged). Also, I did get a nice boost w/ an oc to 1200 using PrecisionX without the auxiliary power on there. Going to test if the oc will boost up my frames. Running Very high w/ fxaa in Crysis3 and I'm getting a smooth 60-70fps w/ vsync off biggrin.gif

I totally lost sight of this. I was in a rush to put my build together (excuses, excuses, tongue.gif). JimmyD was in contact with me about his issue and I really didn't help him much since I was struggling a bit. I found his thread and that turned on the light bulb in my head on my setup. Sure enough, no auxiliary sata power cable for the gpu(s). For two 690s, its a must for most if not all high end boards that can run quad sli. I was almost ready to call it quits on the 690s but i knew something was wrong. even was convinced it was my mb w/ a "medium" oc (turns out oc on cpu is perfect fine).

So in the end, I was helped by a member who actually looked for my assistance redface.gif. It happens to the best of us. I'm quite happy i could conquer Crysis 3.

Still, dreaming of going 5x1 so I'll wait for amd's next gpu series biggrin.gif
