Is a 450watt powersupply is enough for this RIG?

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
i5 2500k
gigabyte p67
2 sticks of ddr3 ram (6B)
HIS HD 6850
2 casing fans
2 7200RPM HDD SEAGATE BARRACUDA
and a DVD rom

I'm choosing between 2 modular PSU's namely:

Topower SilentEZ 500watts
and
Huntkey Cable Master 450Watts.

The reason I want Modular is because,... I want to maximize the airflow and the neatness of my system.

Thanks guys! tongue.gif

Avoid the Huntkey as they have been known to explode and kill systems. Not sure about the topower, I would choose one from a more reputable company like Antec, thermaltake, seasonic, etc.

None, the Huntkey is superior but both are very old units/designs.. what else can you buy?

The X7 units are good to excellent, the Jumper 300 Gold is also an excellent unit(and I suggest you pick one if it's available and priced well)... all other Jumper units are decent.... AcBel R88 500/600/700 are also excellent units....

I take it you're in Asia.. Singapore, Thailand or the Philippines maybe!?.. link the shop/s you're buying from, let us have a look at what's on offer.

I'm from the phils and high end PSUs are unavailable here so I'm stuck with those...

Huntkey Cable Master = 2,200 (50$)
AcBel iPower 560 = 1,900 (43$)
Huntkey Jumper 550 = 3,800 (86$)
X7 = 6,800 (Way pricey) (154$)
Cougar = 2,500 (56$)

But back to my question, is 450 sufficient enough to handle those specs?

The problem is that it is unknown if it actually puts out 450watts as most cheap PSU's cant deliver their labeled wattage. Without proper testing it is unknown what it is capable of. Check the review I posted of the Jumper 550, it was properly tested and performs as it should.

Quote from the article about Huntkeys reputation:
Quote:
Interesting enough the internal part number from this unit inside Huntkey is HK650-53PP, which suggests a 650 W power supply. Most likely the manufacturer lowered the labeled wattage in order to be able to get the 80 Plus certification, an amazing departure from the company’s old policy of labeling their products with peak (fake) wattage.

That's a 250W system at full load.
