Is almost correct there are older lens that can be mounted to the camera but can damage the camera. Also note that D40 doesn't have an actual autofocus motor built into the body if I remember correctly so lenses that don't have "AF-S" will only work in manual focus mode because of this.

all nikon lenses and bodies no matter how old are the same mount, F mount. so a nikon lens from 1950something will work on your d40. an old Manual Focus lens on a new body will not magically have auto focus. and auto focus lenses on old cameras will not work and you will have to manually focus. although im not sure how you would control aperture on a new lens with an old body. maybe priority mode.

you have nothing to worry about any nikon brand lens will fit on your camera. if the lens is not AF you will have to manually focus the lens but it will work fine on the camera just might be a challenge to get used to not having auto focus and i think you may have to also manually set your aperture. i am not 100% sure on that because i am not a regular nikon user.

there are some issues with using pre-ai f mount lenses on digital bodies. i dont shoot nikon so i am not sure of the exact issue.

Sorry, for the D40 - it isn't any Nikon (that is more true with Pentax actually)

Just to fill in also, there are some lenses that will not work. Don't get me wrong, you'll likely never see these lenses. But if you do, don't try to mount them.
Top of the pile is for any Nikon DSLR owner - the pre-70' fisheyes made by Nikon - many of these have a protruding element that will collide with your shutter & mirror. These required a full time mirror lock up. Now, again, these are very rare, so you'll likely never see them.

Pre AI lenses (Nikon years '1959-77) wont mount at all (unless modified)
AI & AI-modified will mount, but often wont meter perfectly. Of course no AF
AF& AF-d will mount & meter, but no AF
AF-S, AF-I, & G will mount, meter & AF.

Basically you need the 7-10 point contact lenses to get all functions. Looks like this:

5 contacts or less means reduced functions.
