Anyone burned a motherboard like this before?

Guys/Gals, this is in the water cooling section because well, we water cooling folks love to do custom rigs with sleeved cables or buy pre-sleeved extensions, this was one of those extension cable..

My computer has been crashing a lot today, so I took a peek inside to make sure there were no leaks, not once, but twice.. I didn't find any.. SO I thought a re-image (format) from a previous good install that I know is 100% clean and error free was necessary, manage to stay stable for 20 minutes before crashing again.

So I went to basics, Windows 7 install with only the bare essentials, threw in Heaven benchmark and enabled 3 way SLI on a single screen, it went for 10 minutes then I started smelling faint funny odors, like something burning, then crashed..

Could not find the problem, last thing I thought would have been the ATX power connector, so I thought maybe it was my mind playing tricks on me.. Gave it another go and this time, even my Missus confirmed that there was a odor, much stronger this time..

Took it apart piece by piece and this is what I found... What do you guys think? Any chance I can get a RMA? Kinda bummed out, this board cost me $500 when it was first released.

Did you have an optional extra power connector to put extra juice to the PCI-e slots plugged in? If you did, that's definitely a manufacturing fault.

no, the Gigabyte P67 UD7 does not come with a extra power connector on board, only for the CPU I think..

Correct me if I'm wrong but that happens if the board is pulling too much power.

That'd be the problem then, too much draw from the PCI-e slots without an additional power connector always means melted 24 pin.

3 580's... Sounds legit.

RMA it. This is a design defect from Gigabyte. IMO any motherboard that supports SLI/CF should have an auxiliary power connector. I can still see some budget or even high end motherboards like ASUS not including such power connector. Not having it/using it = melted ATX power connector.

Your 24 pin supplies power to the whole board apart from the CPU itself.
3x580s means 225w of power just from the PCI-e slots, add in up to 75w each for every other card you have, and all the onboard stuff, and that's a LOT to be flowing through the 2 or 3 pins of the 24 pin that give +12v, but it's usually the grounds that melt, as there's only 3 of those for EVERYTHING.

I have a UD7 with three 580's and I cranked those suckers up big time. Never had any problems. Though after some reading I bought the EVGA power boost to get a little bit more juice to the PCI-E.
