New Pentium D 940 owner confused

Hi, The clock speed of my 940 is often refered to as 3.2 GHz but i sometimes see it shown in some programs as 2.4GHz. In windows system in control panel it gives both the values just mentioned.

Can anyone explain whats goin on here as i am quite new with the intel stuff.
thank you

Ive only heard of it today when i purchased the computer, it has a stock clocks of 550MHz GPU and 800MHz Memory 512MB so its not a bad mid range card and its running games like fear, prey and ghost recon with high texture and model detail settings really well. Ive tried to researh it a little on the net but found just one article talking about its impending release.
It isnt even mentioned on the nVidia website, they go from 7300 to 7600!
weird but its performing ok anyway and ive already got 50Mhz and 100Mhz more out of it!

Maybe your speedstep or something is enabled. On my laptop I have a P3 1Ghz but some programs including control panel say its 700mhz. Check your clocks with CPU-Z if you want an accurate reading.

My chip does that as well. Seems related to enhanced C1 as well as speedstep. I had to disable the c1 to stop it from doing it. The chip drops down to the lowest multi being 12, 200 x 12 = 2400, to run cooler and use less power. You can also use the 12 multi for overclocking by setting your speedstep to minimum and increase your fsb from there. You may be able to acheive a higher FSB than before using the 16 x multi.

make sure EIST is disabled in your BIOS, it lowers the clock during idle cycles and to reduce temps

I wouldn't recommend turning EIST or C1E off. If the system works great that way, so be it, it's a power saving feature and having a Pentium D which consumes so much electricity, it'd be a good idea to leave it running with less power when not needed.

My Pentium D 945 overclocked to 4.51ghz runs at 3.18ghz and sure, when the full 4.51ghz is needed, it kicks into gear, so why do you guys recommend turning EIST off?

BTW, My Core 2 Duo runs at 2.0ghz with EIST enabled and full 3.0ghz when it kicks it into gear.

i remember someone had stability issues when EIST was on, and it was more stable with EIST off

Both, Conroe and Presler are stable at the speeds I'm using.

At stock or barely overclock, EIST shouldn't be turned off IMO, I haven't experienced any stability issues.

I haven't found much difference in how high I can overclock with C1E and speedstep on or off. C1/speedstep can disrupt some programs from running smoothly such as audio recording software.

One thing I have noticed with recent bios updates(for at least the P5w dh) is that it says you cant change vcore unless you disable C1E and speedstep. It also locked my previously unlocked multi on my Presler.
