A truly great game doesn't need expansion sets. Competitive gamers do NOT want new things because it destroys what they wok so hard at. Ask any pro, they'll tell you the same.

With that said they're adding a LOT of new stuff to both single player and multi-player so the casual gamer should rejoice, and the competitive gamer has to adapt. It's only natural that the casuals dictate what we play. Natural and unfortunate.

One of the things I love about SC is how the game evolves on its own, without dlc and patches/expansions. I dont mind expansions once and a while, but I'm afraid of it destroying something so beautiful.

A lot of players have already gotten bored and quited the game even before this expansion (which is not the players' fault, blizzard is really taking way too long, it will soon be more than 2 years if they don't speed things up). They would really want to bring those players back with this.

if they wouldn't add new units, the expansion would be a portion of the story, some maps and some UI / balance changes

only hardcore SC2 players, you know, the one that's already playing it, will buy this expansion if that's the case. Might even lose some less hardcore players who are disappointed with this expansion

If they want to attract new players, or the already-quited old players, they need to bring something fresh to the table.

WC2 was way harder than BW. Only 9 units per selection, square units boxes, random and moving resources? But the original WC was way better than that - you had to build roads and send out a unit EVERY time you wanted to mine resources. With no hotkeys. That's WAY harder.

Things like unlimited unit selection, MBS, auto-mining, etc. all add to the game, not take away from it. They're perfectly natural evolutions of the genre, and with the gamer NOT focused on repeating menial tasks I would argue that more focus can be made on actually playing the game. Yes, it's more impressive knowing that all the BW pros managed to do all that stuff on top of all the usual unit micro, but does that really make for a better overall game? Imagine what Jaedong or Flash will manage to pull off if they don't have to take care of all the pointless little tasks and can focus that skill on even crazier micro or more insane macro. They'll be great to watch if we really do see a lot of BW pros transfer over to SC2.

Why does it matter though when winning the battle has nothing to do with the initial A-move?

Well you see, the rating system is not a show of how skillful you are, but rather how far you have progressed in the game. For example I have been playing for over a year now and am in diamond league, but when I started out I was low, low bronze league. Over time I have progressed and advanced how I play the game. Sure there is some correlation between rank and skill, but it is more progress than skill. A-move is pretty much used everywhere BECAUSE it is good in the sense that move-command is not. SC1 used it too. You WILL A-move your army to X location because if you use move command and they get attacked, well there goes some free units for your enemy. And definitely barely any players use a-move to win, unless they are SO far ahead micro does not matter. I can name tons of players that do not use a-move only. You may find in some battles a player may initiate with a-move, but then nearly no time later they will target fire certain groups of units onto other groups of units and position them correctly before they actually enter battle.

Also A LOT of SC2 is not about just massing these two giant armies that at the end will just collide and the winner is determined by who wins that battle. If you watch a lot of pros play, their streams etc. it is about so much more than that. The tactics behind SC2 is like no other game I have seen.
