New PC audio setup.

Currently with a Z-5500 and Asus Xonar Essence STX(so I can't get the H6 board tongue.gif).

But I'm feeling like selling my 5.1,don't have the place anymore in my bedroom and my card doesn't support 5.1 analog,so I'd rather get a good 2.0 or 2.1.

So,amp + bookshelf speakers vs self-powered speakers?Budget of ±250$
Keep in mind that I live in Quebec(Canada),so can't access to cheaper prices from amazon.com or other websites.(as getting Swann speakers) . I am aware of the used market over canuckaudiomart, but there's barely anything for sell close to me.

Choices so far; M-Audio AV40 or the Audioengine A2...BX5a or A5 if i can get them a bit cheaper.

Also, how would I add a sub later to those speakers?

Thanks for the input.

I really enjoyed the sound of the BX5a's. Either passive or powered will work, either have an arguable case of flexibility. Adding a powered sub-woofer is easy, typically you will just run the audio to the sub then from the sub the speakers as you will use the sub's crossover. Might take a bit of macgyvering to hook up a 1/4" TRS to a speaker wire output though.

The BX5a's are a nice set, one of my college friends got a pair, haven't heard the AV40's though but they seem popular enough. Bookshelf's will give you the extra thump from them alone depending on the brand without getting a sub but since you're asking about adding one on I'd forgo the bookshelf speakers. Also the A2's may be a bit too compact unless you're wanting that, if not the A5's would be the good choice between the two.

My Sub Setup:
I have my Alesis M520s hooked up with my logitech Z-2300 for times when I want to have some heavy bass and that's with a 1/4" to two 3.5mm spliter (Monitors using xlr to rca and then an RCA stereo spliter in one of the previously mentioned 3.5mm inputs, the Z-2300 sub uses a 3.5mm so its straight in.) All that connected to my Xonar ST.

I'm sure there are other and probably easier ways of doing this but it works ^^

Try to find some reviews via google of both them devices. I cannot recommend one, as I don't have those speaker-set. But each speaker has a certain EQ setting, which makes them better for one genre than another. So I would say: Check google, youtube etc. This will probably give you the best results, apart from just going into the store and listen to both the devices. Good luck!

Looks like there's a new version of the BX5,the BX5 D2.
But couldn't I use a XLR to rca directly?

Yah you could for the time being, but to do the sub later on will require more cabling, I originally did what you just stated till I brought the monitors back from college and had the Z-2300 sub laying around that I wanted hooked up.

Also for stores, definitely try looking if a Guitar Center is nearby or close in any way, I went to one in my college's city and they had most of the mainstream studio monitors available for listening. Just checked, no Guitar Centers in Canada, not sure what's available up there or how close you are to the states in Quebec

Understandable when the gas would cost just as much as half or more of a pair of speakers. I'd take a look at some audio blogs and such then, there's quite a few reputable review sites for this stuff, I'd stay away from youtube just because most of them they'll verbally say why they did/didnt like, and so on when the sites will give you graphs and what not to see which set will be the best overall.

Alright,I think I'm going to order Fluance SX6 along with the Lepai TA2020A+.

How I'd wire all that with a subwoofer?
