Best fans for water cooling ?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone.

I need to buy 10 fans for my water cooling setup (360+240 push-pull setup). What is the best 120mm fan for water cooling ? Some people say Cougar Vortex fans are the best but yet i havent seen any of them in a water cooled rig here.

I hope someone can give me some information about this, thank you.

Most people will suggest gentle typhoons, I run noise blocker xl2's. Here is a link to more information than you will ever want about fans.

I swear by gentle typhoon AP-15's all I will use now.

Well, it really depends on what you're looking for, as there are a number of factors to consider when choosing the "best" fan. If you're looking for best performance and don't care about size or noise, there are plenty of 38mm thick fans at screaming rpms that will put any 25mm thick fan to shame. If volume is a slight concern but performance is the top priority, you could go with something like San Ace H1011's (2600rpm, 38mm, 40dB). If you need 25mm thick fans but don't care about noise, stuff like the Gentle Typhoon AP-29, AP-30, or AP-31 are good candidates. If noise is more important than performance, then Gentle Typhoons and Noctuas both do very well, depending on what RPM range you want to run there's plenty to pick from. If budget is top priority, Yate Loon or XSPC fans are your best bet.

yeah well its my bad that i didnt mention what exactly i am looking for. I care about performance ofc but i also dont want a screaming fan in my case. In this case Cougar Vortex fans would be a good choice ?

Gentle Typhoon

Fan Speed: 1850 RPM
Noise: 28dBA
Airflow: 58.3CFM

vs

Cougar Vortex

Fan Speed: 1200rpm
Noise: 17.7 dBA
Airflow: 60,4 CFM

Typically, the people that sell the fans exaggerate the specs quite a bit so they really aren't a reliable way of comparing fans. Really either the Vortex or Gentle Typhoon fans will give you good performance on radiators so I would go with whatever looks best.

Knowing the thickness of your rads will help us too if you're looking for good performance without adding too much noise. Larger rads, like the Phobya, work better with slow-medium (~1250-1400 RPM) fans. Small rads, like the Black Ice GT Stealth, work better with high (~1700 rpm) fans.

What exactly kind of radiators do you have?

I didnt buy them yet but i was planning to buy http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14316/ex-rad-312/EK_Ultimate_Performance_CoolStream_360_XTX_Series_Liquid_Cooling_Radiator_EK-CoolStream_RAD_XTX_360_.html?tl=g30c95s161

Cougars wouldnt be enough for thick radiators if i use push-pull ?

Thick radiators are usually optimized for low-speed fans. Cougars would be more than enough.

As superericla said, Cougars should be near perfect for that rad. Good dbA rating, better CFM than GT, and better static pressure (seemingly more important on thicker rads). They aren't nearly as high rated as the Gentle Typhoons, but from what reviews I've seen they get generally good ratings. And you don't really have to do push-pull with thick radiators unless you really want to. You're going to see a 3-5 degree difference in load temps at the most, so it's up to you if you want to drop the money for 5 extra ones at $14 a pop. It's these or the AP-14's. You don't really need AP-15's because of the thicker rad, therefore you'll get less noise with the AP-14's.

Hope this helps and let us know if you need any other info/help.

Edit: Video review between the two fans you're considering if you haven't seen it yet. Video review link
