6950 2GB vs 6850 CF - Page 3

I would also suggest a 6950 2GB ESPECIALLY for BF3 as it's VRAM usage is usually around 1.4 GB at 1080P with MSAA 4x at ultra. While the crossfire choice will have a higher output GPU wise you'll be limited in newer games, BF3 being one of the major ones, by the lack of VRAM at 1 GB. Not to mention you can down the road upgrade to a second 2 GB 6950 for cheap and still have the benefit of the 2 GB of ram in Xfire.

Now If you'd like to spend less than $300 I'm currently selling my MSI Twin Frozr III 6950 2GB unlocked to a 6970 that sits at 900/1400 at stock voltage! If you're interested PM me!

If mentioning this is not allowed please let me know and I'll edit my post, just trying to help a guy out biggrin.gif

Good Luck with whatever you choose to do, Nick

I highly, highly recommend looking in the OCN Marketplace's Video Section for insanely cheap used cards.

560Ti 448 Core $210

ASUS GTX 570 DCII for $200

I would agree with jackofhearts495 but unfortunately both cards linked are 1280 MB VRAM cards and it seems that's what we're looking to stay away from. There are a few other options in the OCN Marketplace though under $300 so continue looking!

If you're just gaming 1080p, 1280mb of VRAM is plenty.

In BF3 when maxed at 1080P with MSAA 4X on I use more than 1280 MB of VRAM, not to mention games coming out are looking to use larger textures at those same 1080p resolutions calling for more caching storage! Not that you really notice a HUGE difference in BF3 with MSAA enabled at all, but regardless if you're looking to somewhat futureproof your GPU I personally would suggest a 2 GB card or more as it allows for expansion into Multi Monitor setup, or higher resolution single monitor solutions.

Of course this is all just my opinion and nothing stated here is set in stone and as always it's all up to your immediate and upcoming future needs.

I got a Sapphire 6950 2GB Reference design I would sell for $235 shipped if you wanted to do that since I'm getting a 7970 or GTX 680 soon. I don't have "rep" so I can't sell on a thread here but it was bought March 8th, 2011.

Why dont you get a HD7870? its new generation, uses less power and overclocks well! even HD7850 would be a good choice u can crossfire that later on if you need to.

I went from a 5770 to a 6850 (6870 clocks) to my 6950 (6970 clocks).

The jump to the 6850 was a massive difference, and to the 6950 noticeable again. Going from a 5770 to a 6950 will blow you away. Literally 100% fps increase across the board, more in some games and double the VRAM for all the eye candy.

If it were me, knowing what I know, I would go the 6950 out of those options. Make sure you get one that can overclock high (good spec'd, cooling, brand etc - I realize its a bit of a gamble) and enjoy it.

But yeah, I would be looking for a good deal on a 7870 if possible. Huge overclock potential, runs cool and power efficient, latest tech. Will stretch you a little over budget though - the cheapest one listed on newegg is $329. You might be able to get closer to $300 shopping around if you're lucky (I'm out of the loop and can't say for sure). Otherwise grab a good model 7850 for the best price you can. They'll still end up beating a 6950 and overclocked will compete with 6850's for the same price range (if not cheaper). This is the best bang for the buck without a doubt.
