Its the other way around , he wont pay premium for a 6950 if he need anothe later, the 6950 is the most popular GPU of 2011 because of the unlock to a 6970 and its price, its mean EASY to find and LOW price because the used 6950 market will be big in incoming month. Just looking at friends I game with , we are 6 and between us we have 7 6950, one went with a nvidia and the other still rocking its serie 5.

I'm in Canada, but I'm currently looking at getting an MSI Twin Frozr III 6950 2GB that is already unlocked to a 6970 for $215 shipped.

There you go, probably the best you'll get for the price. Either that or a GTX 570 should be very similar in price.

I think thatll be a good choice. You wont have any driver issues and unlocked, that thing will give you great performance and that 2GB will definitely come in handy for games like BF3.

I wouldn't be considering anything that's 1GB these days. the 6950 should last a bit longer, can always throw another one in later. just my 2 cents.

neither. get a 7850. it's as fast as a 6950 and will use much less power then either set up. also if you havnt tried a crossfire rig before i suggest you do before ever going cfx cause some people really hate the micro shuttering.

EDIT

seen you bought a card. the 6950s still a solid performer

That is a good point. BF3 seems to use a lot of VRAM if youve got the eye candy cranked up and I see more and more people talking about it on other sites and such. Even for 1920x1080, might be a good idea to go 2GB or better if you can, especially if you like the eye candy maxed out.

Bottom line, CF 6850's will be more powerful than a single 6950.

However a single card is ALWAYS more future proof than a dual card set up because you could always add a second 6950 later. Also some people will complain about difficulties using a CF/SLI set up.

If I where you I would pickup a 7XXX card and be done with it. however if its only between CF 6850 vs single 6950 I would go the 6950 route. Its an amazing card for single monitor usage at 1080p or less.
