Looking for JBOD Controller

Thread Starter
I have run out of internal SATA ports on my server motherboard. I would like to add a controller to expand my storage but I need a recommendation. I could add multiple cards if that keeps the cost down.

Pretty much any HBA card would do the trick,SYBA,HighPoint come to mind at decent prices(there are of course cheaper).Just depends on how many ports you want to add.It would also help if we knew a price range and what expansion slots you were looking to use,pci/e,x1,x4 etc...

The information on my server can be found in my signature for Unraid Server. I have three PCI e 2.0 slots (16x,8x,4x), and I have six slots used on my motherboard. I'd like to have room in the future to have a maximum of 14 HDD (the max my case can hold). Therefore, if you have any recommendations for one or more JBOD controllers to support up to and including 8 additional HDD's it would be greatly appreciated.

First I'd like to point you in the direction of Murlocke's thread,so you can see how he's runs his setup. And what he's using for extra sata ports. Then I'll point you to this post in the for sale section of the forum.Good card/s,for good price.

Fixed. The Dell PERC 6/i isn't a JBOD controller and cannot do JBOD; for that you will need a Dell SAS 6/iR. The Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 still has issues with drives dropping off when the card is under load. For more info concerning this, look here.

The IBM BR10i is also an option for JBOD, as well as any cheap LSI SAS HBA you can lay your hands on.

Yes, but like the Dell PERC 6/i, it's not JBOD capable. It can do RAID 0, 1, 1E, and 10. You would have to create RAID 0 virtual disks with 1 drive, then you could technically use a software raid to do whatever with it...but that's kinda pointless.

IBM M1015 man as already suggested here. It's a rebranded LSI 9220 and you can flash it to "IT mode" making it just an HBA. And what's best is you can get a used (or even new server) pulled one right now for like $70-$80 shipped on eBay as opposed to $300 or so retail.
