Server Advice

Looking for some advice here.

Ive been given:

E 5400 CPU
4x1gb DDR2
GA-P35-DS3L
Cooler Master 500w PSU
Have 2x1tb Samsung F3s
1x1tb Seagate

Still need to buy a Case, maybe an operating system, maybe a raid or at least a SATA card?

Case is no big deal. Probably going to get a Lian PC-K58 for $40 off of the egg.

What I really need to do is determine the OS and make sure I am starting out the right way for expandability.

After looking into the options, I can't decide between WHS, WHS 2011 or FreeNAS.

My main uses for the server will be Stream VOBs to my HTPC, Backing up my PC and work laptop and personal laptop and my Wives laptop, also game installs etc... as well as Remote file access for when I travel. Plus the Android Manager APP I read about seems pretty cool.

I really thought the Drive Extender feature of WHS was an awesome concept, and a lot of people seemed to love it. But WHS 2011 has a ton of features I want, but lacks a native drive expander, although there are 3rd party extenders.

I have been looking into FreeNas, using a ZFS file system, but that also seems to require multiple drives to expand in order to maintain redundancy. It also doesn't have all the features I would like in the OS, requires more RAM than I have on my setup currently, but is free.

Is WHS2011 a good enough Operating System? I actually bought that software once before, but decided to can the idea and sold the OS. I'm thinking it is the right OS for me. Does anyone have any advice on this? Need any more info? I'll be glad to provide it!

well i mean for your goals i would say just get windows 7 with some extra programs installed to do what you want.

I mean take it from experience windows server is extremly tedious to set up if you dont know which stuff to install and configure (not to sure about WHS though but if its anything like windows server 2008 its tough)

NAS might be easy never really tried it out, but rest assured everything you have planned can be done on win7

i currently have win7 configed as an media server that streams vid to my mobile and ps3 and my other pc has it set up to back up to my main machine using some auto backing up programs

For your situation you seem to be going in the right direction with WHS 11.WHS 11 has add-on software that's like DE from WHS v1,theres STABLEBIT ,and DRIVE BENDER.I'd also like to recommend you look at Amahi. Amahi has all the features your looking for and third-party apps for backup(Crash Plan etc). Plus it's more functional than FreeNas.

Thanks for the replies, I did try amahi my last go around but it just was odd to me. It just so happens that WHS 2011 is on sale for $42, I figure ill pick that up on newegg and use it.

If I recall, Amahi requires some flavor of linux be installed, correct? I am very uncomfortable with Linux unfortunately, have not used it at all really. I did get so far as to get it set up, but just didn't totally understand it.

I guess ill stick with WHS 2011...

That being said, should I go with some flavor of drive pooling add on?

If not, should I get a raid controller before doing anything further with installing windows?

Thanks,

Yes you are correct Amahi does require you run it on top of Fedora 14.If your more comfortable using WHS 11 then by all means go that route. I haven't personally used Drive Bender, but I did use Stablebit when it was still in development on Win7.It ran just fine with a few buggs here and there. Now its no longer in development and only cost $20 compared to Drive Bender which is $40.Both come with tech-support if you ever need it.I'd head on over to each site to get more info.Or post a question in the wegotserved forum, your question/s might already have been answered. Hope this helps a bit. thumb.gif
