Skyrim default savegame path. Any place OTHER than C drive possible?

Thread Starter
I have since moved all my savegames to my big 2TB drive since they were piling up on my SSD. However when I launch Skyrim, no save games are found (No continue or load options on main menu).

I wish games would stop having default paths to C... A lot of people DO have multiple hard drives lolz.

Yes, but I would like to store them somewhere else. I cannot find any method of doing this.

I'll consider that. But I want to know whether or not it's possible to force Skyrim to recognize any saves in a place other than its default (I'm doubting it tbh, but worth a shot).

Actually, I think there is. check this out.

There is a line in the Skyrim.ini (located in [documents dir]\My Games\Skyrim), fifth line or so, called "SLocalSavePath". You can modify this value to change the directory where Skyrim puts the save files. This is how the 3rd party "profile managers" available on the Nexus work, by modifying this line.

However, I must point out, that while I know you can create sub-folders inside the Skyrim "My Games" folder, I don't know if you can map outside of that location. You could try by adding a full logical path, [drive letter]\folder name\...for example, "D:\Skyrim\Saves"

In a way you can.
Simply make a Symbolic link to direct the game (and any other application) to the new directory.

Example:
Code:
mklink /d "C:\Users\username\Documents\My Games\Skyrim" "G:\My Saves\Skyrim"

I found it and changed it to reflect the new save location which is a cloned My Documents folder on drive G (the 2TB drive I have). I set the Windows default path for documents to that copied folder.

However Skyrim still won't detect any savegames.

Your path to the G drive folder w/the saves (in the cfg file under SLocalSavePath) is probably syntactically wrong somehow. If you cut/paste what you have listed in the config into the 'Run' box in Windows, does it find the folder properly? If not, that's likely to be the issue.

Also, setting the WIndows Documents 'path' I believe only changes the default location Windows will choose for you in Save File dialogs, like when you go to 'store' new files and it defaults to the Documents folder. An already-installed game won't use that value for anything ... although potentially it could useful when you install entirely new games ...some games I'd guess will look up this value from the registry and decide to create the save games folder at the Documents path you've chosen at the system level. Some may not though.

Last time I set up my Windows I got all crazy and installed my entire "Users" directory on a completely separate hard drive from the rest of the OS. It was a pita for sure (shouldn't be, but it is), but it was also one of the best things I ever did. Never have to worry about losing save games (or any of the rest of the important stuff that ends up in the Users folder by default) if my Windows install gets mucked and I have to 'scorch the earth' on the OS partition.

This is my ini and I don't see where to edit what you guys were talking about.
I am however, very new to this and might be missing where. If not should I just create a line and if so how far down?

Thanks all.
