The point I'm making is the article title is very misleading and the discussion in this thread would be very very different if the title read, "Intel says ivy bridge runs hotter because of 22nm."

Pretty much how it is. Intel had no clue heat would become a problem until they has the ES chips produced. By then there wasn't anything they could do to fix the problem, as it lies within the manufacturing process and the not the architecture designs.

That's the other side of my point. Intel is blaming it on the 22nm. We don't know if it is a design fault. It may work very well at stock, but overclocking is a given as it should be. anyone not able to clock theirs to 4.4 would be very mad. i would be mad.

Die shrink = more heat density.

There is no way Intel could have not known the chip would run hotter if they didn't dramatically reduce power consumption.

Likely they missed their target voltages, causing less of an improvement in power consumption, resulting in higher heat densities than anticipated.

There is no remotely logical reason for your doubt.

Clock speed isn't inherently better for gaming (or anything else) than IPC improvements are.

Going from first Gen Core i7 920 to 2600K 45nm to 32nm did lower temps but why 22nm the opposite? Is it because they did not change much inside IVY as they did with SB?

The 2600k was two generations after the 920. The 2600k is a 2nd generation 32nm chip. Arrandale and Gulftown were 1st gen 32nm parts, and they didn't overclock much better than contemporary 45nm parts, and Gulftown at least did not run any cooler.

Anyway, Ivy didn't reduce power consumption enough relative to die area. Just looking at the cores, You have 75-80% of the power in 50% of the space.
