Need help planning my fx-6100 mild overclocking and testing.

Hi I am in the process of building a rig just waiting for a final parts price list before ordering so will be in a week or so before building. Parts list so far. Amd fx-6100, xfx 850 watt single rail semi modual power supply, ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Professional Socket AM3+ AMD990FX+SB950, 8Gig G.skill 1866 ram, XFX HD-695X-CDFC Radeon HD 6950 Video Card - 2GB, GDDR5. This a upgrading rig as I will probably get the fx-8300 next Jan or so.

Anyways questions so far?

I need to torture test the cpu before over clocking it to make sure its ok so need programs to do so a list would be appreciated. Want to make sure its ok before voiding the warrintee.

I was originally thinking of emulating the fx-6200 by over clocking to 3.3 and 3.9 turbo but after some reading hear found it can do a lot more. I really want to play around with turbo core frequency and possibly clock to 4ghz and about 4.4 turbo mode and not sure if cool and quit will screw with a mild overclock willing to loose a little performace, kind of trying to emulate a factory over clock and those numbers seem pretty good 4.2 and 4.4 would be ok.

Also need testing software for stability testing and and am pretty much sticking to what others have already dome.

Does anyone have a ASRock motherboard do they overclock nice?

Thanks in advance.

Prime95 is great for stress-testing your CPU

CPU-Z is good to help monitor your system temps, clocks, and voltages for OCing

AMD Overdrive has a nice stability test feature, and can help you get a rough estimate before OCing

Good Luck

Your system looks fine for overclocking, except maybe the CPU cooler? Are you on the stock cooler?
If you are you'll want a good cooler.

Prime95 is good for finalizing an overclock, but it takes to long too run when you are in the initial stages.

You will need CPUz to show system speeds
HWmonitor to show system voltages and temps

I prefer to use Sandra to do initial overclock testing. The processor test is great for testing stability, and there are benches for everything in the system. You can download it here

I am getting a corsair H-100 dual 120mm fan water cooler for the system, eventually will have a fx-8300 in it.

Just ordered my system and price is pretty good, getting some good deals on pricing. Hopefully next week I will be overclocking my fx-6100 thumb.gif

Read through my thread. I'm almost done OC'ing. tongue.gif

Are you planning on doing crossfire? Just wondering why you are getting such a big PSU.

6100 is a pretty good chip for overclocking. But its performance is absolutely terrible. Compared to my 955 BE at 4ghz, the FX 6100 at 4.5ghz is about 15% lower in performance frown.gif

And thats with them at stock.

the 6100 is a horrible chip, especially for what they try and charge for it.

And this page http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-fx-8120-6100-4100_6.html

Demonstrates how it outperforms the 6100 in gaming, and even close to the 8120/8150

Unless you want to try and discredit Xbitlabs? one of the most reputable benchmark review sites.....
