Performance Tuning Protection Plan by IntelĀ®
The Performance Tuning Protection Plan being offered by Intel is a chance for you to experiment with the overclocking features of your processor without the worries of what will happen if you push the processor too far. The Plan allows you a single processor replacement, hassle-free, from our customer support. This is in addition to your standard 3 year warranty. In other words, if it fails under normal usage, we will replace it under the standard warranty; if it fails while running outside of Intel's specifications, we will replace it under the Performance Tuning Protection Plan.

So what we are saying is this: Go ahead and push it, we've got your back.

http://click.intel.com/tuningplan/

I know people are already aware of this but I just noticed that Intel updated their performance protection plan to represent the new IB K series. Definitely a worthwhile purchase if you plan on running out of spec and should entice you to take your chip even further than it can go!

New PC builder here, so I didn't know about that. Thanks. Might consider it.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how will they know if it fails due to overclocking or not?

This plan seems pretty iffy to me. Under what conditions would Intel replace the CPU? If it fails or acts funny at stock? I'm sure they won't do a damn thing if your chip degrades over time and can't hold the same overclock without more juice... it's hard prove such a situation.

How many times have you guys actually fried a chip?

The only people that I can see benefiting from this are those that are going for the absolution maximum OC.

So basically you pay $25 for a protection plan without having to worry about going all out with your OC and being a bit more liberal with your temps.

If the chip fails or is faulty while running at in spec/regular settings (think about businesses, casual users etc, non-overclockers) they will replace the chip at no cost under the 3-year warranty. This is just Intel's standard warranty on all their processors/hardware.

With the protection plan you pay $25, if you are running out of spec (enthusiasts, overclockers) and due to clocks/volts/temps the chip fails or runs faulty within your 3 year warranty period - they give you a brand new chip under the plan and if you wish to continue the plan you pay an additional $25 to cover your new chip the same way.

Basically this gives peace-of-mind to go balls to the walls, be liberal with your temps, and get the most out of your overclock as possible.

Seems great to me and I bought it without hesitation. I'm sure that much like insurance this will never be used and is a great business move by Intel. I just like having the peace-of-mind.

So do you have to tell them the OC you were using so they can verify the degradation? Or is it basically whenever you want you get a new chip? I just want to know how it works.
