23inch Portrait surround vs 27inch 120hz

Hi guys.

I'm wondering if I should add 2 more Dell 23inchers for portrait surround or if I should get a single 27" 120hz TN display(Samsung/Asus for example) and use my current Dell monitor as a secondary display for browsing etc.

I play Borderlands, BF3, Diablo, HL2, Skyrim, pretty much everything I can get my hands on. smile.gif

Running off a single GTX680, see sig rig.

Anyone with experience from both or similar setups and can share their experience?

Most people that try 3xPortait end up switching to a single large display a cpl years later. Any kind of competitive gaming is far easier and involving with a single display. Heck, Vega just made the switch from 3xFW900s to one. IME there is a limit to how tall a monitor can be before it becomes an issue with competitive gaming.

Just the same as a a slightly less powerful single GPU is going to beat out any similarly powerful SLI setup just from a practicality standpoint.

A high quantity of cheaper things doesn't always beat out a singular quality item.

The thing is, the vast majority of players, especially on a forum like OCN, don't play in any serious competitive fashion. Arguing that the advantage of a comfortable easy to use setup is what matters most is based heavily on assumptions on what the guy wants and / or does. It's always interesting to see how so many people place their whole recommendation on one, often somewhat useless, aspect of the product / end result. What if the guy doesn't care about a smallish competitive advantage that won't make any difference for most people?

Gaming at 3240x1920 @ ~40" is potentially much more immersive than most single monitor setups. It can be much more enjoyable for certain genres of games, basically anything but RTS, platformers, or most 2D games.

Well, what he'd gain with the 120hz route is rather clear.

It's all about what he's looking for. If he's looking for the more immersive or jaw dropping setup, the portrait solution is probably better. If he's looking for a more comfortable setup that won't prove to be an issue anywhere and will do well at most gaming, the 120hz route is better.

Thanks for an awesome post De-Zant.

I do believe I'm looking for the immersion factor, which I don't get gaming on a single 23" monitor.
A lot of the time I've been thinking about moving my gaming pc down to the living room to play on my 42" plasma since my Dell doesn't really wow me at all.

I don't game competitively at all, but I do very much enjoy having a smooth playing experience.. I might just look for a 23" 120hz monitor with VESA and put that into portrait surround.. smile.gif

Running 3 22" monitors in portrait surround and I absolutely love it. I had an issue with the bezels being an interference so I took them off and painted the metal frame. I'll upload a pic later when I get home if your interested.

Haha, your 680 will love you for that. For a while I was playing bf3 on a 6870 w/ eyefinity.

Just remember that when your not gaming, eyefinity is kinda pointless, so I would advise using them as extended desktops in normal windows. also, your screen will be fairly narrow now so you'll have to make use of the left-right scroll bar sometimes.

Those are a fess things I overlooked when I went eyefinity. Overall nowhere near deal breakers tho!

I'd love a pic Leftfield smile.gif

I'm a little bit afraid that the 1080res will be a bit too narrow when using the monitors for normal desktop usage :/

So I just got a quote from a couple of stores on prices for the 27 inchers, and because they've got HDMI connectors, they all get taxed as TV's, giving them extra 25% tax on top of the normal 25,5% sales tax, so we're talking around 1500$ for a single s27a950d for example. rolleyes.gif

So with that out the window, I'm looking at portrait surround again.
I'm thinking about getting 3x Dell u2412 to get the 1200 vertical pixels, but I've always noticed something crappy which I'm afraid will follow me over to the u2412.. When scrolling fast down web pages I get very obvious screen tearing always on the same place on the monitor, close to the top left corner, it's like there's a box that refreshes slower than the rest of the monitor.

It's also very noticeable in google sketchup, which I use a lot as a hobby, when orbiting or panning around a room there's a line across the entire monitor that breaks up walls etc, it's not always in the same place, but always around 1/3rd down from the top of the monitor.

I haven't noticed this when gaming, possibly because I force adaptive v-sync? but it annoys the hell out of me, and I'd hate to get 3x ~300$ monitors and have them all act like this. ;/
