geforce fx 5500

ok i know almost nothing about graphic cards or overclocking or anything i think i just have a simple question. i have a 4 year old dell with a 1 gig of ram and a 2.66 mhz processor and a geforce fx 5500 graphics card (upgraded from the stock 5200 that came with the comp) i am stuck on a dial up connection. i play a mmorpg online called eternal lands and i am having problems with massive lag 500 ms pings to 25000 ms pings and also my frames per second vary from 2-60 lately they have been running around 30. will updating my drivers for the video card help any of this. my current drivers are from 2004 version 7.1.8.9

Is anything else trying to access the net as to why your getting high pings?

Apart from Dial-Up

The new server could be slower or further away, also they might be doing work on the server as your playing that makes you lag.

this may or may not make sense to you guys i don't know if this is common or not but the game has a feature called poor man which diables alot of the graphics like clouds fog shadows reflections up until last night i have always kept that poor man setting well just for the heck of it i turned it off and turned on all the stuff it disables and i gained fps instead of losing it which totally doesn't make sense to me i went from 20 fps to 35 fps

Yes, updating the video card drivers to the latest will help improve frame rates (fps) a bit. Also overclocking the video card will improve even more. You can download a program called coolbits. Install it, then to get to the program just right click on the desktop> nvidia display>your monitor> clock fequency settings. Then enable overclocking and click detect optimal frequencies. This will choose the best overclock settings for your card. If you experience any artifacts (wierd out of place colers or lines) just back the clock speeds down a few mhz untill the go away during game play.

I agree with pbasil one, try overclocking your card a little and see if that helps (dont expect any monster overclocks though, and watch the cards temps). That being said, if the lag you are seeing is caused by high ping, no amount of overclocking is going to help, as its not your card holding you back, its your internet connection. I think its time to go to DSL. =D
