Newbie Overclocker - Blue Flame

Hi from New Zealand,

My handle is the registered racing name of my horse.

My Avatar is the cheap n nasty case my OC machine is installed into.

I've been using a computer that my son built a couple of years ago for a school project that was specced from a magazine as a budget overclockable game build (except for the case and the ram). I'm using it for my HTPC but also playing around with overclocking it.

Specs are:

Case: Raidmax Tornado
PSU: Corsair CX400
Motherboard: Asus P7H55-M Rev 2.01G
Bios Version: 1302
Ram: OCZ3X1600LV4GK 4X2Gb (2 matched pairs)
CPU: Intel G6950
CPU cooling: Stock Intel
TV Card: Hauppauge HVR2210
Wireless card: TP-Link TL-WN571ND
OS: Windows 7 64bit

I've had it overclocked to 4.2GHz, DDR3 1600 and run Intel Burn Test on maximum for around 20 minutes. Using RealTemp, with room temps around 17C I get core temps topping out at 90C with no throttling (thermal staus ok). Asus Probe II shows CPU temp at 62C and motherboard temp at 30C.

Obviously I'm now looking at cooling options for which I'll start a thread elsewhere in the forum.

I'll also place somewhere in the forum a little quirk I found when overclocking but here it is now . . . . . usual disclaimers apply . . . .

My 4.2 GHz overclock is done by placing AI tuner in manual and just raising the BCLK from 133MHz to 200MHz. Everything else is on auto. However, if you apply this OC with the RAM speed on auto it will fail. The trick is that you first have to apply a RAM only overclock at 1033MHz, save & exit, and then finally go to the 4.2MHz OC by placing the BCLK at 200 and setting the RAM speed back to auto. i.e.

1. From a default setting in the bios, set RAM speed to 1033MHz, save & exit.
2. With RAM currently running at 1033MHz, Select AI Tuner to manual and raise BCLK to 200MHz.
3. Set RAM speed back to Auto
4. Re-enable speed step if the manual selection disabled it - you might need to go into >Advanced>Core to reset it.
4. Save & exit and you should get 4.2GHz and DDR31600 (if your ram supports this)

No voltages were touched - all left on auto and all power saving features (Speedstep, C1E and C-States) are enabled and it is solid as a rock (apart form high core temps).

Bottom line, this OC will fail (at least with my system) from the default RAM speed, you have to speed the RAM up first then go back and apply the BCLK.

Hope this helps someone.

Welcome to OCN! Please put your rig in the Rigbuilder (top right of website), then edit your signature so that everyone can see it when you can post!
Happy overclocking. thumb.gif

Thanks for the welcome smile.gif

OK I'll do the rig builder thing now - just couldn't wait to get into the rest of the forums.

I guess I should've posted some voltage readings for the above since I left everything on auto . . .

CPUID shows CPU voltage hitting 1.456V and ASUS Probe II shows it at 1.42V. I know the intel max spec is 1.4V but since I left LLC enabled and (as I understand it, could be wrong) the actual CPU voltage should be somewhat less than indicated - as the readings given show demand and the actual voltage should be less due to Vdroop.

Cooling solutions? Hyper212+ from Cooler Master is what most people recommend. I do too, I used to run one of those.

I also use one of these based on many recommendations here on OCN. Although I enjoy it and think its pretty nice (especially for the price) i think if i had done some more research on my own I would have ended up with something a little nicer. I think the extra money might have been worth it. So my advice is just do a lot of research and go with what you think is best. Nothing is wrong with taking suggestions, but being educated is better.

I'm still stuck at air vs water (Antec 620 in mind).

My main concern with the air coolers is the weight that is place on the motherboard.

My main concern with water (and air tower) coolers is that I'll lose the cooling airflow to the motherboard components around the CPU socket.

If I could find a top down flow air cooler with low weight and decent performance I'd have to consider it.

Dont want to be messing around with motherboard cooling mods at this stage.

So I'm looking for something that will get my core temps down without mechanically or thermally stressing the motherboard. Having low core temps should not come at the expense of cracking or frying a motherboard, yes?
