New GPU / gtx 480?

Thread Starter
So now that the prices of some video cards have dropped, I've been thinking I need to change my gpu, and I want to hear your opinion about it. I don't want to spend too much money my budget is around $250-$300. The gtx 480 seems like a good choice (performance/price) I don't really mind the heat or the noise or the 560ti which is not as good as the 480 but runs cooler. Should I wait a little bit until the other 600s nvidia cards come out or should i just get the 480 and possibly in the future get another one for sli. BTW I mostly play BF3 and Crysis 2 on 1080p.

i'd vote for 480's current price. nothing wrong with waiting for the 600 series though. your 460 should be good for a few more months. then make your choice on either new 600 series or a monster 480. wink.gif

Q - off topic : how's your 875k holding in your sig rig. which CPU cooler are you using ?

The 480's are great cards. Another good idea is find a new/used GTX 470. They are very powerful and tend to be cheaper. They have since been discontinued. But I've had no issues with them, and ran them for nearly 2 1/2 years. Had them clocked at 800/1650/2000 24/7 365. And they never had a issue.

So you really think i should wait and buy the 480. My friend he bought a 480 a long time ago and there was something wrong with it, so he had to return it and I am scared that it might overheat after some time.

off-topic-my 875k is great i pushed it past 4.3 no ht but 4ghz is the temp limit after that its like a something very hot (couldnt think of anything)
I am using the eco coolit alc with dual fans

I love my GTX480, but needs to be watercooled for it's full potential. But even at stock, it's still a beast at 1080-1200p

Unless your doing watercooling, your not going to gain much more power over the 470's going 480. That's the primary reason why they stopped selling the GTX 470's. They provided almost the same amount of GPU power as the 480's, but at a much cheaper price point. They faded out the 470's and released the 460's instead. Which had a far greater spread in performance compared to the 470's vs 480's. So if a 470 is consider to weak, then a 480 would not cut it for you, you'd want to go into the 500 series, maybe a 560?

ha? 480 > 560 Ti 448 core > 560 Ti > 470
If a 470 is weak why not go 480, since the 480 is a stronger card than the 2GB 448 core GTX 560 Ti?

http://www.hwcompare.com/8868/geforce-gtx-470-vs-geforce-gtx-560-ti/ (470 vs 560 Ti)

http://www.hwcompare.com/11145/geforce-gtx-470-vs-geforce-gtx-560-ti-448/ (470 vs 448 core 560 Ti, clearly the 448 core 560 Ti out performs the GTX 470)

since 560 Ti out performs the 470 - http://www.hwcompare.com/11144/geforce-gtx-480-vs-geforce-gtx-560-ti-448/ (448 core 560 Ti vs 480, 480 out performs the 448 core 560 Ti)

hope that was useful info smile.gif

GTX 480 is cheaper than the GTX 560 Ti and yet out performs it, @ 209.99 at newegg you cant go wrong smile.gif http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130759
