Motherboard audio vs sound card (optical SPDIF)

Thread Starter
Well I have the following parts:

Mobo (Asus Z77 Deluxe) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131818

Speaker (Energy take classic 5.1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882269024

Reciever (Pioneer VSX-821-K) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882117397

I want to know if it will be worth my while to get a sound card. I mostly listen to speakers when I game or watch movies, I don't really like headphones very much. I know that there is a lot of thought about using a soundcard vs mobo audio, but because SPDIF is digital and it's all 1's and 0's then does it matter?

The sound output from your receiver is probably going to be higher quality than most sound cards except for the highest end. Someone more knowledgeable about your receiver should chime in, but personally I would just toslink my motherboard to my receiver and bypass the little chip on the motherboard entirely.

If I understand correctly hooking up your motherboard to your receiver like that your receiver is doing all the converting your motherboard is just sending the data. That's how mine is set up as well.

I use a Yamaha RX-V567 and 2 Energy CF30's and 1 CF70 with a BIC F12. My receiver does all the post processing my motherboard just sends the data over to it, again if I understand correctly. You will be limited I think with the amount of power that set can output, that's probably your biggest limiting factor, but I'm no guru.

I know my receiver for instance produces much higher quality sound than any sound card made. The top of the line Asus offerings may equal it as far as some components and processors go but that's about it. Especially since I use it to bi amp my speakers and I am powering them from the receiver and not the small amp inside a 5.1 "computer speaker" offering. Sorry if I am rambling.

I pass coax off realtek to my lower end VSX-416 and all things considered, it's great thumb.gif However if it gets real late and i wanna enjoy a movie i hook up my trusty JVC RX-700 cans to the AVR and it's all good

I would use take advantage of the fact that you have HDMI and forget about TOSLINK. You will have 5.1 uncompressed channels full time.

If your receiver is HDMI compatible I would recommend going with that. Like ramicio stated, you can have 5.1 uncompressed channels. However, TOSLINK is great if you're doing stereo stuff (5.1 isn't bad either, but means your receiver has to be 5.1 surround processor capable)

Hmm yeah my mobo does have a HDMI out, and the receiver has 4 HDMI in's haha, so I guess I get an HDMI cable and do it that way. Thanks!
