cat5 cable question

Thread Starter
ok looking at this pic 265 and it seems to me the only difference between the cable is the green and red are switched on a cat5e cable so my question is if i switch the green and red on a cat5 cable will i have a cat5e cable? but the bigger question is i am running a cable to my basement i have a 15 foot cat5e cable and about 15 feet of cat5 wire. i was plan on cutting a smaller wire and soldering the connector to the cat5 cable and at the other end use this adapter because i have one then using the 15 foot cat5e wire to plug into my computer. so will it work if i switch the green and the red around

The classification of cable does not depend on pin-out.
Most implementations are 'B'.

^ that.

Go with the B standard.

Also (and if it's not too late) buy cat5e rather than cat5 (without the e). It's still cheap and you'd be capable of gigabit speeds which would be far from gauranteed with regular cat5 (in fact extremely unlikely).

If one end is t568a and the other t568b you have a crossover cable. Works with routers, hubs, switches because they can usually switch them over.

If you're just after 100Mb/s, then cat5 will suffice. Move to gigabit and you'll need a minimum of cat5e.

Also, as the other poster had stated, NICs (PC, switches, etc) auto detect the cable type and adapt according. So you don't need to worry too much about re-plugging an existing cable. However if you're crimping new cables, then the general rule is to use the B spec.
