GTX 460

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and basically the idea of building your own computer. Being under 18 I'm still surprised I got as good as a PC as I did considering I'm jobless. The only problem is- the dinky HD 6450 in my case. I have my specs and everything in my rigs so I was wondering if anyone would want to suggest a good graphics card that I could get under $150. New would be nice but a used card would be ok.

Right now I'm thinking about getting a GTX 460 1GB off of eBay.

Also, could someone tell me where to get a 460 that's a Nvidia design? Like the one below, I like the look better and was wondering where people get them, you see them on eBay all over.
302

Any suggestions welcome!

I wouldnt buy anything off Ebay. No telling what youre getting. Just bite the bullet and pay the extra few bucks to get brand spankin' new stuff from a reputable retailer. Itll save you a lot of potential headaches.

AS for which card, for $150, this HIS 6870 is $155 with a $10 mail in rebate. This will be enough to max most games up to 1920x1080 resolution. Most GPU muscle for the dollar right there.

Im under 18 as well , and just get a radeon 6870 instead of a gtx460 because it perfroms better while staying at around the same price.

I totally see your point and would normally agree with you. I almost always buy new, but with a few exceptions. Last year I bought my ASUS M4AGTD-pro USB 3.0 MB of ebay for $50 less than retail. It had all of its accessories, cables and even had an unused case badge. Also the protective plastic coating was still on the VRM heatsink.
Also, this year I purchased my second GTS 450 off ebay for almost 50% off retail and it is working perfectly in my SLI setup right now.
I'm not saying all ebay stories end up like this, but I am saying that I am a very wary buyer, but if i do my homework, really check out the seller, and their reputation, make sure I buy in the US, and make sure ebay will back me up if something goes wrong, then go for it. thumb.gif

Yeah around that price the 6870 is definitely your best bet for a new card.

Youre right. I dont mean to come off as saying every seller on Ebay is a crook, just that I hear WAY too many horror stories about buying stuff off there and it being remanufactured, repaired, knock off or outright DOA and I have crappy luck so I know which ones Id always get. biggrin.gif

Me personally, Id rather pay a little more just for the peace of mind.

Hmm, ok. Would you recommend buying from someone on Craigslist if you can actually go to the persons house and have it proved it ran? Or is it just the used parts in general that you don't think is the greatest idea?

Just because of the way things are these days I wouldn't go to some strangers house to buy anything. I'd much rather spend a few $$ extra and buy from newegg or amazon and be done with it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Buy this card right here at Newegg. Ive been buying from Newegg for many years and have always had excellent service. Best retailer on the internet IMO.

good build - and avoid ebay. they have terrible prices on computer parts. i got my used gtx 460 from here for $80 shipped. for $150, you could get a gtx 470, or even a 480
