i7 950 overclocking...again

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
Hey guys

so I overclocked my i7 950 t \o 4ghz when I first built this system like a year and a half ago or possibly longer. IT has been running fine ever since... but since then I have forgot a lot of what I did (was a noob to overclocking)

I JUst built my first water cooling setup and now want to see if I can overclock further. What are safe idle and load temps for this cpu? Also what settings would you recommend starting with on this cpu to overclock higher?

What I would do is run cenibench 11.5 a bunch or the cpu test in 3dmark vantage. Prime95 is very hard on a cpu an if you plan on keeping it for some time id skip prime95. Just see if its stable with what your going to do with it 24/7.

IM at 4.2 ghz with my i7 930

21x200
Ram 1600mhz @ 1.65v
Qpi = 3600mhz
Vcore = 1.296
Qpi = 1.41v
CPU PLL = 1.84
IOH = 1.14
With HT on
LLC set to Level 2
C1E is enabled *(i like it to clock down when idle)
C3/c6/c7 = Disabled
E1ST = disabled

This can pass Intel Burn test - 20 Passes @ MAX memory & 20 passes Linx @ 25000
8hrs of Prime

I live in a warm environment to and i get CPU CORE idle temps around 35-40 and usually core 1 will touch 70 with IBT or Linx (im also cooling a gpu in my water loop)

thanks I will try some of these settings. Your vcore is lower than mine but your qpi is higher.. is this better? And what are safe volts for qpi and vcore?

I know the newer i7's people get them to like 4.6+... are we able to do that with the i7 930 or 950

I've had mine at 4.7Ghz and i reckon there is too much vcore needed to run games/ stress and stay within safe temps - for my setup to handle anyway.

I was running Corsair Dominator 1600mhz at stock timings etc with a much lower qpi (same settings & OC) but the ram seemed to be unstable at higher oc's

ATM I'm running OCZ Platinum 1333mhz - running at 1600mhz they needed more qpi to be stable - these seem to oc way better then the dominators i have :S

Check out this guide to, won't be much difference with the 950

i just tried your settings man and mine can definitely not do that. I had to set my vcore to at least 1.35...

Any ideas why?
I get about the same temps as you though

different hardware is why, you may need more voltage? could be your ram/settings? could be your mobo/settings? my mb is meant for large oc's, solid cap's all over, my mb is a beast, and my ram oc's well to.

I think 35-45 are normal idle temps.
I'd look out at 80°C load temps, though.

Is that normal with water cooling? I'm at about 40-42 right now idle. My load with prime is about 70c is that OK? What is highest safe core for these?
