Looking for the best 140mm intake fans. Help me choose!

Thread Starter
I've been researching 140mm fans with good static pressure. I am planning on replacing the 3 stock 140mm intake fans on my Lian Li PC-P80N with fans that have better concentrated airflow. I would like to create a positive pressure case and with the current stock Lian-Li fans I think it's tipping on the negative pressure side.

I'm stuck between these 3 brands:

140mm Cougar Vortex HDB (1.38 mmH2O)

140mm Silverstone AP141 (1.55 mmH2O)

140mm Noctua NF-P14 (1.29 mmH2O)

Obviously on paper the Silverstone provides the best static pressure but of the 3 which is the best intake fan? I'm also concerned about how the fan sounds on full speed. My current stock Lian-Li fans have a natural airy sound at full speed and would like something similar. I don't want a fan that sounds mechanical or turbine-ish.

I'd say the cougar, becasue the silverstone limits the airflow alot becasue of the grill, and the noctua is just not good. thumb.gifthumb.gifthumb.gif

Just want to be sure, the Cougar uses native 140mm mounting holes right? I'm tired of those 140mm fans with 120mm mounting holes out there.

yes, but they are still a bit round instead of a square. the holes are 140mm so it shouldn't be a problem.

Cougar ones are better, only air pressure benefits the airflow on heatsinks,clc,rads...

Would you also recommend the Cougar Vortex PWM for a 120mm intake fan? I'm using a Lian Li PC-P80N and that fan would go into this HDD cage, my cage is also loaded with 4 HDDs and a SSD so I'll need a strong fan to push air between the drives.

I did a little digging on the forums and I see the Scythe GT AP-15 receiving high praise as well as the Noctua NF-F12 PWM as a 120mm intake fan. I'm reading the AP-15 produces a slight mechanical noise when spinning at full speed and the Noctua produces a more natural wind noise, is that true?

Yes the cougar can be used for you job at pushing air though the drive cage.

Well i personally have a AP-15 and you really cant hear the mechanical noise over the air flow noise, the mechanical noise is due to the ball bearing while the noctua uses a different bearing.
if i had to choose between a Noctua and a GentleTyphoon, i would definitely pick GentleTyphoon thumb.gif

Edit: You would not be able to hear the GentleTyphoon if you have it at ~5V

I believe this might be a good 140mm fan: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835242011

It has exceptional cooling and is VERY quiet. Also proper 140mm mounting holes.

I have both the AP-15 and F12 and I can vouch for the AP-15 is a much better fan, especially if you can vary the speed. The AP-15 just pushes air better and is much quieter at low speeds. At higher speeds it does give off a bit of a hiss from the bearings, but inaudible at low speeds in a case.
