AMD vs. Intel build

Thread Starter
I am currently debating on what processor I should pick... AMD or Intel.
My budget will be 90-150. Im looking for a processor that will overclock well and not hog wattage at the same time.
I will purchase the motherboard around the processor this time.

Currently I have a AMD Athlon X2 7750 Black (OC to 2.9GHz), DDR2 4GB, XFX 6770 1GB (OC to 910MHz), 500W PS

Any input would be great! thumb.gif

The newer AMD chips that are in that range are not much better than what you have. I would wait for a little bit. Intel would be $160+ for an overclocking version and you would need a new motherboard. My advice is to save some more money and get something better when it comes out.

if your worried about power get the i3 2120 and the asus p8h61 usb3 mobo round 170$ for both and the i3 is awesome for gaming its a dual core ... but does have hyperthreading so 4 virtual cores it smashes alot of amd chips too

Before all the amd and intel hate starts up, I recommend looking for an AMD 10xx Thuban (AMD Phenom II 6 Core, preferably 1055 or 1090T since you want to OC) and on the Blue team (Intel) there is the i5 2500K (Sandy Bridge) which can be picked up at a pretty fair price here on OCN or brand new... Microcenter has them for $169.99.

Just providing input, hope I helped.

The point of overclocking is to achieve better performance, and on the extreme end just to see how far you can go. The better question, however, is why does it matter if you can get a chip that performs at stock speeds as well or better than another that is overclocked? The answer is, it doesn't matter.

The point I am getting at is that on such a tight budget you can get a Core i3 2130, yes I know it is dual core but because of Hyper-threading it is seen as 4 logical, which outperforms MANY quad core and even a particular 8 core processor in many tasks. Not to hate on AMD, but the i3 2100 even beat the AMD FX-8150 in a few gaming applications, only to lose out in heavily threaded projects like encoding/decoding. For the cost of say an Phenom II X4 980 you can get an I3 and board, and it will easily keep up with the 980.....

It just isn't about clock speeds and cores, it is about efficiency of what you have....

If you're a gamer, the clear budget winner is intel.

i3 + cheap h61 mobo = ~$170
Phenom II x4 + 970 mobo = ~$210

And the i3 performs better... in games.

Yup, I have an i3 2100 that should arrive today I am going to screw around with, I like taking the "little chips" and pushing them until they scream and seeing what they can do.

Nope, sure can't. Which is what makes it even better considering that it can beat out the Phenom II BE series, even when overclocked.

EDIT: Well actually you can overclock them, but very very little and it is very stressful on them. You have to do this by adjusting the BLCK.
