I've been thinking of upgrading my nearly 1½ year old system to something new but I'm unsure which platform and specs will makes best sense within a fairly restricted budget.

The setup I've been looking at primarily is

Intel® Core i7-3820 Processor Socket-LGA2011, Quad Core, 3.6Ghz, 10MB, Boxed, no fan included

MSI X79A-GD45, Socket-2011 ATX, X79, 4xDDR3, 3xPCIe(3.0)x16, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0, UEFI

Totalling around 3500 Danisk kroner or USD $ 625.

The only "demand" is a motherboard that has 3-way-SLi support in a dual-slot layout, so I can reuse my GTX 580s. I assume I can reuse my 16GB 1333Mhz Ram too ?

I don't have any overclocking in mind.

Some say I'd be better of with a socket 1155 setup with a z77 motherboard and a Intel® Core i5-3570K Processor or Intel® Core i7-3770K Processor ? however such a solution is a bit more expensive than the one I've looked at.

Others tell me I should wait upgrading till 2013 since the Core i7 870 provides enough steam.

I'd appreciate any advice to what would be the most "sensible" upgrade both regarding price/performance. smile.gif

If you have 3 GTX 580's you need to run LGA 1155 really isn't a choice due to the CPU's only having 16 PCI-E lanes (ie; max possible you can run is 8x/8x)

LGA 2011 has 40 PCI-E lanes however, which is plenty for 3 GPU's. 16x/16x/8x

If you feel you need to upgrade then you should see only one possible path with your current GPU's, otherwise if you feel that you have enough power right now then just wait it out.

Okay my initial assumption was also if upgrading then it should be socket 2011. However at some point in time I have though about replacing the 3x GTX 580 with 2x GTX 680's.

Overclocking is not something I do really any longer. I just let Intel Turbo Boost activate to let the CPU run 3,4~¨3.5GHz when available. Due to time constraints and the fact I can't afford to "burn" hardware I don't OC smile.gif

If you are only going to use 2 GPU's then LGA 1155 should be fine, however with PCI-E 3.0 GPU's I'd go with Ivy Bridge because I'd want 3.0 support. thumb.gif

Just keep your current setup. There's nothing out there it can't run, to be honest software needs to catch up to hardware. I'm on 1156 as well and I probably wont upgrade till the next consoles are released as my system is more than enough for current games.

put it under water and hit the 4ghz mark and be happy. mine hit it without any problems and stays cool also. only other thing i see is that you may need to get faster ram if you do overclock.

Thank you for the answers thumb.gif

The system runs my programs and games just fine for now, so I think I will save up for a Core i7-3820 cpu and the MSI X79A-GD45, Socket-2011 board later this year - probably when I have the money around autumn I'll do the swapping smile.gif
