[Build Log] Dodgee V - First Time Mod (NZXT Phantom)

Hi everyone!

After cruising through the forums and admiring heaps of very inspiring case mods, I finally decided to have a go at modding my own case. I've had my current computer (check my sig) for a little over a year now, but due to work and other commitments I threw it together to get it working, and haven't really done anything else with it (in terms of building/hardware/modding). My usual lurking ground is the Official PHANTOM Club (I have a Phantom case) where I have drawn most of my inspiration from, so thank you to everyone who contributes to that thread for showing off your tips, tricks, creativity and skills smile.gif

I started ripping my case apart and had it in bits before it occured to me that it would be a good idea to take some photos, by which time it was a little late to take a "Before" pic....

So here is my rig, minus front and top plastic trim panels. Also, my rad is not in it's usual position (hanging off the rear exhaust fan):

For those potentially interested in following this thread, be warned: I work a morning/night shift roster so the times that I can spend working on this project will be a bit haphazard. This will not be a fast build.

I will endeavor to keep this thread as updated to the current status of this project as I can.

Enjoy!

Just a quick update as to some of the work I did over my days off...

All components removed from case.

450

Top panel removed and large HDD cage drilled off.

450

After a few days of thinking and playing around with some designs, finally marked out and roughly cut out my 200mm to 120mm fan adaptor plate. Intend this to be mounted in my forward top fan cutout. Only roughly cut - still needs to be hit with a file. Also, holes need drilling...

450

More updates to follow...

Managed to spend some time on the adapter plate - all edges cleaned up with a hand file in the time it takes to watch a movie...

450

Next up: Mounting holes to be drilled, deburring, quick hit with a fine file to clean up the edges, demask and hopefully some painting over the weekend smile.gif

Minor Update

Hi guys,

managed to grab a few minutes to work on my case a bit more:

Borrowed some "skin-pins" off a guy that I work with to hold my fan in place while I drilled the mounting holes to ensure everything lined up perfectly.

450

450

Now for some test fitting!!

Looks like everything fits alright underneath....

450

Top looks alright too biggrin.gif

450

Next up:

- Prep and paint fan adaptor
- Make that 200mm CM fan fit a little better (some of those mounting tangs are overhanging into the side panel recess - they need to get chopped off)
- Maybe some CF vinyl work....?

Until then!

Have fun smile.gif

Another update:

Ok, so the paint that I was planning to use for my fan adaptor wasn't quite the color I was looking for, so I'm going to have to go looking for an alternative frown.gif

Can't really go check out any paint suppliers as my car is currently in the workshop getting a service, so I've spent the day masking up and rubbing back my top trim panel. I've decided that while I do want a blue glow from the 200mm fans LEDs, I don't want the top of my case beaming like a lighthouse.... So I've decided to paint the inside of the top trim panel in a non-glossy black to try and suck up some of the extra light, leaving (hopefully) just a bit of a glow. Guess we'll see how it ends up tongue.gif

Anyway, here a couple of pics:

450

450

While I was out the back taking the above shots, I had my hard drive rack arrive smile.gif

450

Are those USB 3.0 sockets?? Yes, yes they are tongue.gif

450

This device manages to squeeze a 2.5" HDD/SSD *and* a 3.5" HDD into a single 5.25" bay!

450

Planned for the forseeable future:
- Painting fan adaptor
- Painting top panel
- Dismantling rest of case, and prep for more painting...

Later! smile.gif

Another quick update:

Didn't have much of a chance to do as much painting as I wanted to yesterday, but I did manage to finally spray the inside of the top trim panel.

450

450

Also pulled my PSU apart to get it ready for sleeving (MDPC-X sleeving ordered last night!)

Goodbye warranty wave2.gif

450

Plan for today:

- Prep wires for sleeving (wrapping them in electrical tape)
- Find some paint for my case (metallic blue)
- Really need to start the CF vinyl work ><<br />
Later!

how much mdcp (length) did you get and in what colors? I'm really interested in seeing what people do with their sleeving. it adds a bit of an "art touch" to the computer.

ALSO: build is looking good! sub'd

MDPC-X sells cable sleeving in 10m (approx 30 ft) lengths. I measured how long each of my cables were, figured out how much I would need of every color I would need and just made sure that I ordered rounded up to the nearest 10m.

I ended up ordering the following sleeving:

-20m small white
-20m small black
-10m small blue (B-magic)

There was some precut heatshrink of each color included in my order as well.

Oh, and I am also using white SATA sleeving that I have had sitting in a box for a while now...

As for the pattern, all I will say is: mainly white with some blue and black - you'll have to wait until I throw some pics up once I've actually sleeved some cables tongue.gif

Glad to hear you are interested in following my log - thanks biggrin.gif
