Overclocked My X2 4400+

post #1 of 21
Thread Starter
Hey guys, first post here

I was new to the overclocking world a few days ago.
I read the entire internet about overclocking and decided to have a go at it on my Asus A8n32-SLI deluxe/x2 4400+/2gb 2x1gb pc3200 dual channel OCZ el platinum 2-3-2-5.

Anyway, after taking 5 hours of my evening yesterday and another hour during my lunch from work, I believe I finally have the best setup I can get and I want your guys advice.

Also, I had a few issues that I wanted to ask you guys about. I'll list those at the end after I show u my current config.

Currently setup in BIOS:
fsb = 240mhz
HyperTransport multiplier dropped to 4x
cpu = 2.64ghz (11x multi(max)), voltage = 1.4125v
ram voltage = 2.8v
ram = 2.5-3-2-5 @ 216mhz (433mhz) w/ command rate of 1t (stock speeds are 200(400)mhz)

I tried running these timings with 4gb of ram (I had a second kit of this ram) but to no avail. I couldn't overclock at all really.. even at 2.85v. I decided to remove one kit so I could overclock the 2gb which I figured would benefit me more. The kit is brand new so I guess i'll just sell it while it's worth alot, hehe.

Things seem to be running solid at those voltages/speeds but I am having a few issues.
BTW, all of this is that I'm about to post was done under VISTA X64 EDITION RC1, so maybe that could be the cause of some of the weird issues? Let me know...

1. My hypertransport link is only running at 719mhz according to CPU-Z, but my fsb is at 240 with the htt muilti at 4x.... ? i don't understand, shouldn't it be 240x4?

2. under "memory" in cpu-z, it says my frequency is at 264mhz - my question is where is that number coming from in relation to 216(433)mhz?!?!

3. also under "memory" it says my fsb:dram = cpu/10. is this normal? again, i don't know what that figure means.

4. speedfan tells me my vcore is at 1.46v yet in the bios i have my processor manually set to 1.4125... which is correct??? the manual setting i hope. also, the second vcore lists "0", so something seems screwy.

thanks alot for any help guys!

1. It sounds like the htt multiplier is at 3x

2. Since you have DDR ram, the frequency is doubled because it is double the data rate. So it is 216x2

3. Yes, this is normal. Its just the ratio of the front side bus to the ram.

4. Go with the one in your BIOS because the software is usually wrong. Sometimes, the software doesn't have complete access to the BIOS.

in my bios htt area i have 4 settings, top one i believe(i'm at work) is k8 to NB? that is set to auto.. maybe that's what is at 3x? the link speed is also set to auto. the 2 below it, though, are manual settings. SB to NB is set to 4x which i changed from 5x and the link bandwith is 16 x 16. should i manually set the top ones to the same 4x and 16x16?

Also, I know about DDR and how it's multiplied by 2 to get the actual speed.. i'm not a retard

I meant, where is the 260 coming from? I don't see any relation to 216 or 433 to the number of 260. where is that number coming from?

My tip is leave nothing at auto. Computers are dumb so don’t trust them.

I have my FSB running at 237, and under my ram settings (i'm not sure if that's my divider or what that is..) I have it set to 216 instead of 200. What is that getting me exactly?
is my ram running at some kind of an equation using 237 and 216? or what is going on? what should my ram be at?

You test to see if you stable?run 2 primes and you would know first if you stable or no stable.You run some memtest?I have mine xms in 166 take a look,my memory can't run in 200 or 1:1 divider.But first you need to check if you are stable to keep goin or stop rigth there and stsrt to check what's goin on.

For the 4 gig you'll need to set your Command Rate to 2T.

Quite frankly the x2 4400 at stock screams... While I can get to 2.75 with a ton of work I'm just very scared of running 1.65 on the chip. I've settled with a 250 fsb with cpu @ 10x and my ram at 2.5-3-3-5 and my HT @ 4x. I noticed with the hundreds of benchmarks I ran on my cpu that having the HT lower then 1000 turned into crappy overall system performance... even though everything I had read told me that it wouldn't have an effect.

So be happy =) because anything over 2.5 is really crunching some data on these toledo cores =)

I might add... that in real world utilization on these things scream. I coded a java program that sorted and returned the order of a 15 meg ( roughly 13,000 ) file in under 3000ms using an O(NlogN) algorithm. I haven't found a computer yet that's beaten it =)... Maybe a conroe ^_^

As for your other issues... I'd suggest makeing sure you run the latest firmware and using the BIOS information rather then the apps.
