That is the thing, it IS better.

People don't want to take the time to realize that SB to IB is a tock to tick where as the first gen i7's to SB was a tock to a tock.

It is the SAME architecture. SB to IB is the same as 65nm core 2's to 45nm core 2's. There shouldn't be much of a difference between them at all except lower power consumption and a smaller package.

The two above arguing about 22nm being the cause of heat. I believe the heat is due to the 3D transistors not the spacing. Its because the heat is not focused parallel like in the past the heat compounds on itself being heated by the transistor next to it. Since the majority of the heat is focused vertically. If we had 32nm 3D transistors or flat 22nm chips. We would see the picture more clearly. This wasn't only a die shrink this was a new transistor form as well.

Edit: and with that said I think 3D transistors are very ideal for power savings. But it would be nice to see a Ivy Bridge E (or a future enthusiast platform) with a pitched roof transistors. That would push more heat away from the chip.

well it is a tick, and in previous ticks there were always different things added apart from pure IPC and speed. if nehalem got 32nm shrink and stayed 4 cores, people wouldve reacted the same i figure.

Find me a preview between January of last year and January of this year where OC testing was done on an actual sample of the chip.

My entire point was that if you are basing your expectations on results or rumors that do not feature an actual working part, used in a manner similar to how you would use it, you are basing your expectations on almost nothing.

Before February/March, one could speculate about Ivy either way. Die shrinks mean more leakage and more heat density, but each successive generation usually has tweaks to compensate for this. However, when the tests results started to roll in, it became pretty clear that Ivy was running hot and was not going to clock better than Sandy, and this was still a few months before release, so no one should be surprised now.

Right but I don't think that is what the thread was addressing. Whether it's right or not baseless speculation happens all the time especially on a forum. Now personally I wasn't expecting a huge increase on OCing ability but I thought perhaps 5ghz would become more commonplace and really good chips might go even further. I don't think this was a ridiculous prediction going off Intel's last four releases.

As I said though in my first post seeing as Ivy is still the fasted x86 quad money can buy I wouldn't say I was dissapointed per say but the heat issues did make me decide to just stick with my current chip rather then upgrading. My gpus are plenty fast without 3.0 and a 5% CPU increase is not high on my list of priorities.
