How would you rate my current audio set up? And which sound card for a new build?

Hey guys,

My current audio set up is either:

Creative XtremeGamer --> Pioneer A-209R-Stereo-Amplifier Amazon Link --> A pair of Monitor Audio Bronze BX1 speakers Link

Or for headphone use I plug a Steel Series 5HV2 headset straight into the Xtreme Gamer. I know gaming headsets get a bad rep but I have been very happy with the sound from the headset.

So how would you guys rate this as an audio set up? I've been very happy with what I hear from it, I'm very fond of the Pioneer Amp and monitor audio speakers.

I'm thinking of building a new rig soon though and I'm wondering which sound card you guys wuold recommend that would give similar or better performance than the Xtreme Gamer. I'm only really concerned with Analogue stereo output, i've no interest in surround sound or any digital outputs.

Thanks for any advice,
Matt

I would suggest reading the sound card section of this thread if you haven't already:

Thanks for the reply, Bobotheklown. I've read over the recommended audio products a few times, there's some good advice in there.

I'm wondering for analogue outputs is the Signal to Noise ratio the most important factor? The latest motherboards have the Realtek ALC898 codec which claims to have an output SnR of 110dB which is greater than the 107dB from the Asus Xonar DS and greater than the 109db SnR from my current XtremeGamer. According to wikipedia the stereo output SnR on the Xtreme Gamer is 115dB.

If SnR is the most important factor i may aswell just keep my xtreme gamer.

Kind Regards,
Matt

I have a similar set for my tv/ps3 which sounds ok. I have tried the X-fi Xtreme music, which is comparable to your card and the titanium HD. Too be honest the sound differences weren't that much noticable between these two cards. I think you should stay with your soundcard as I think you will be dissapointed by the relatively small differences.

Just my 2 cents.
