[Guide] Installing Linux NVidia Propriatory Drivers in Ubuntu - Page 2

i don't really "uninstall" nouveau, i just tell the kernel not to use it. recovery mode does that initially, but when i rebuild the initramfs, so when you get done installing the nvidia driver, and resume the boot, the resume wont load it either, hence why there is no need for a reboot.

The other way to disable nouveau, is to edit grub at the grub selection screen and add "nomodeset" to the kernel parameters line, typically after "splash quiet".

Unless you are feeling froggy and decide to build your own kernel without it :)

Yeah, uninstalling it is a poor option. I say this because you never know when you need something done that doesn't require 3D and the Nvidia drivers might fail on an update. I like having nouveau as a backup so I can get what I want done first, then fix my drivers. Easiest way for me to do that is blacklist nouveau.

I'm trying to do this on 12.04 and it says gdm doesn't exist, I don't know what other de ubuntu does use...o.o

service gdm/kdm/lightdm/lxdm stop

I'm at that part^

EDIT: Okay got it working up and running, is there a control panel like on windows or just this x server thing? How can I tell if I have 120hz enabled?

Yep, open a terminal and type nvidia-settings to see the contorl panel-like settings. It's also in the application menu somewhere. It's under System for me. You can check for your refresh here:

How did you get past the service stopping part? I'm not sure what vanilla Ubuntu uses at the moment. If you used something else I could do with adding that to the OP wink.gif

ubuntu stock uses lightdm, so it would be

sudo service lightdm start

you should change that section of your guide as it is a bit confusing on that part, especially if folks don't know what gdm, kdm, lightdm, etc, are.

Thanks Rubers for a detailed guide. Most instructions assume we know all the command options. A few points to tidy up your instructions as you requested:
1. Add sudo to all commands.
2. After stopping lightdm the system hung on black screen. I rebooted into recovery mode and ran the .run file. It again asked for xserver to be stopped and again system hung after stopping lightdm.
3. Reinstalled nvidia-current as per your instructions.
4. xserver command did not work for me on Ubuntu 64 bit 12.04. startx worked fine.
5. After startx I was asked for a password for keyring then system hung. Used good old CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot and successfully started with nvidia-current drivers.
6. After CTRL-ALT-DEL a black screen showed as the system closed down. A few error messages flashed up, such as items failing to load such as Nvidia, Compiz and others.

As a nicety you could suggest the user take a ghost image of their boot drive before attempting this mod.

Looks like I will have to stick with Unity 2D until NVidia slove this problem and Ubuntu include the fix in an update.

Hi thanks the feedback.

If you type "sudo su" at the beginning of the guide and before entering any commands you will be given root permissions until you close the terminal. Added a few more needed sudo's to the guide, though tongue.gif

Not sure why you got a crash after stopping the DE service... did you try CTRL+ALT+F2? That should take you to a terminal window

startx... yes that's my mistake redface.gif

I'm unsure about the keyring problem you had there. I've run all these commands after performing sudo su but I also don't use the keyring.

You should try transhour's guide instead. biggrin.gif

Sorry this didn't work out for you!
