To NCQ or Not To NCQ... That Is The Question.

OK, I'm looking at putting together a RAID 0 array for the C: drive in my new build (see sig).

The Usual Suspects.

2x Seagate 7200.10 320GB SATA 3.0 Gb w/ NCQ $190

2x Seagate 7200.10 250GB SATA 3.0 Gb $160

Western Digital Raptor 150GB $225

Now what is going to be my best bet for a balance between storage size, speed, and cost? Reliability is a factor as well, so anyone with horror stories related to any of these drives please pipe up.

I've read (somewhere, don't remember where) that NCQ really shines in a RAID 0 array. Knowing that, is it worth the extra $$$ to get the drives with NCQ? Would I even notice the difference without running a benchmark? Or would I be best served by just getting a single 150GB Raptor as my C: drive?

Don't be shy, speak up, people! Links to any pertainant info greatly appreciated.

I knew that. I'm comparing a single Raptor to the RAID arrays. Sorry, I should have pointed that out in the original post.

Ah, duh.

Get the 74GB raptors and RAID them.
IMO, the 150GB Raptor is a bit hyped.

I looked into that, but it comes out to a touch over $300 for that setup. That's a bit more than I'm willing to pay, especially for a paltry 150GB of storage.

2x Western Digital Raptors 74GB 16MB cache

No idea, but i know that my 2 x Samsung Spinpoints in RAID0 beat Ultra SCSI and those Seagate Cheetah drives in RAID0 for like nowhere near the expense.

I haven't had a chance to really run many tests or anything on my newest drives, but I am loving my Seagate 320s in RAID 0.....can't wait to add the 4th one and bump this array over 1TB.

Here's a pretty good article with some fairly comphrensive hard drive tests.....the main purpose of the article is to test the SpinPoint. They measure everything, including power draw and noise. No kidding, it;s 14 pages long and full of tests.
