Yea, general rule of thumb is that the moment you break anything above 1920x1080 you need 2GB and when you get into the resolution you have and higher you need 3GB to 4GB.

Having both a 2560x1440 monitor and triple 1920x1200 24" monitors (5760x1200 resolution), I can safely say that this rule is not so cut and dry. The 3GB 580 makes minimal, if any, contributions to the gameplay experience over the 1.5GB cards. The benchmarks here support my experiences:

http://www.behardware.com/articles/844-1/geforce-gtx-580-3gb-vs-1-5gb-test-sli-and-surround.html

Depending on what paceee upgraded from, he may not be seeing a substantial increase if he came from a card, or set of cards, that were close in performance. wink.gif

To the OP, congrats on the tremendous upgrade! thumb.gif

Playing on 1600p I'm pretty happy I have 3gb 580s. I like to use high quality AA solutions on all my games rather then the stock fxaa crap that's the rage nowadays and that eats up a lot of VRAM. With BF3 taking up 90% of my time too the extra RAM is pretty much required on Ultra. I've seen it tip the scales all the way to 2gb on 1600p.

Again, this VRAM/resolution rule is still not cut and dry - BF3 is all but one game and is not the final say in GPU performance. For you, the extra VRAM can surely be helpful since BF3 seems to consume most of your time, but it may not be for others who play various other games such as what is shown in the article I linked above. wink.gif

I don't deny that you can use some higher graphical settings than I do, but it's not game crippling to use 2XAA on 1.5GB cards, whether at 1440p or 5760x1200. smile.gif

Yeah I'm not disagreeing with you at all. 1.5gb will get you going in 90% of the stuff out there. More often then not you run out of GPU power then VRAM first anyway. Like I said though my main interests right now lay in exotic AA solutions and BF3.

You see, when you break that 1920 x 1080 resolution you need more than 1.5GB, at your ultra high resolutions you need 2, 3, or even 4GB. Not sure if you are aware, a lot of people aren't, but VRAM doesn't pool with SLi. Having two 1.5GB cards doesn't give you 3GB, it gives you 1.5GB as the data has to be replicated in both cards.
At your resolution a single GTX 580 3GB model would perform better than two with 1.5GB. Your issue isn't a lack of performance on the card so much as it is you are hitting a VRAM ceiling. Now if by chance you have two 3GB models then I would be looking at another issue, possibly faulty hardware.

Ok that's just a massive pile of bs.

As is the needing 4gb for anything higher than 1920x1080

BF3 at 2560x1440 needs max 2gb...
