Using Router Powersupply for Seagate external

Thread Starter
So my Seagate freeagent`s external died (12v 2amps)
Its a 1tb I can give model numbers if required.

my Billion router`s power supply physically fits into my seagates power port but its rated for (12v 1.4Amps)
I`m worried that the external might draw more than 1.4 amps during operation/startup and will fry/overload the adaptor and thereby leaving me without a router teaching.gif

Take the chance?
ps might be wrong subforum poke.gif

maybe, your talking the difference of 7 watts. Is the charger very small? It is a concern. but if your using it really quickly for a file transfer I would say you would be ok. You can always put your hand on the transformer and if it's getting really hot then unplug it. I wouldn't use it as a permanent fix though.

hmm its wider and longer but the seagate is slightly taller
also This is a temporary solution since I`m Either going to RMA(if I can keep drive and send power supply) or buy an enclosure for the drive thumb.gif
so temperature is the main thing? what about a 200mm/80mm 5000rpm fan blowing on the power supply? tongue.gif

if you can keep it cool, it will be fine. Think of it as like overclocking. Keep it cool so the heat dissipation from excess wattage doesn't destroy itself.

I wouldn't risk it. Why not just take the HDD out of the external enclosure and put it in your computer tower? I did that to my old FreeAgent 500GB it would get up to 61*C when doing file transfers, now that its in my M59, it says a cool 27*C thumb.gif

Yeah he would, but if it has some valuable data, it would be worth it IMO. My 500GB warranty was gone a long time ago, so I had no problem cracking it open. The funny thing is the enclosure itself was somewhat like a metal tomb wrapped in plastic for my 500GB, absolutely 0 airflow whatsoever. A big design flaw on Seagates part and which is why I will never buy another external FreeAgent again as it seems there enclosures are still the same. My Iomega 1TB external has decent airflow and stays around 35*c-40*c

but why do all that when all you need to do is use the other power supply :3. Just keep an eye on the transformer heat and he'll be fine. Unless its a 12v AC adapter when he needs a DC adapter. lol

another option would be to transplant it into a new enclosure if RMA fails

Bump
not sure if thats allowed tongue.gif
I`ve opened my external and the HDD inside says 1.34 Amps ( 0.72 @ 12v + 0.52 @5v) and the router is rated for 1.4 Amps (with some margin I`m assuming)
is startup requirement greater than 1.4amps?

Also i`ve tested it for an hour or so and it didn't get hot above normal temps while powering the router

does this give me the green light? biggrin.gif
