PS3 Audio Frustrations

Ok so here is my setup :
TV - Samsung 46" LED Series 6 6000
Consoles - PS3 (Fat 40GB) & Xbox 360 (Slim 250gb, soon to have a Wii as well)
Computer - Laptop (waiting on pc to arrive)
Audio - Logitech Z5500 (prefer my AT headphones but their shipping with my pc and this is louder :-D, got for $150)
DVD - Panasonic BluRay player

Everything works perfectly except the PS3 when it is moody apparently. Everything is HDMI into the TV and fiber optic to the Logitech. I have to shut of DD and DTS when playing certain games (Heavy Rain in peticular) on the PS3. Yet if I play a BluRay on the PS3 (with DD and DTS codecs turned on in settings) or Panasonic, game on the Xbox, w/e on the laptop sound works fine. Really annoying to have to go into the PS3 menus and chance audio settings depending on what game I am playing.

Anyone else have this issue and/or ideas on a fix?

Can't you connect your PS3 straight to your Z5500 using an optical cable?

I have never had any issues. My PS3 is connected through HDMI to the TV and optical out to my home cinema set and everything works fine. I now also have an Astro pre-amp and it is between the PS3 and home cinema set and it still works fine.

Buy an optical in splitter.

Almost all games are 720p. Just like Xbox titles but they get upcaled. Which is not much better since the games are developed in 720p. That is consolegaming for you. The next gen will be full on 1080p. But this gen isn't.

Trying to avoid lots of cables to keep everything clean looking. Do you really think the PS3 and the TV could be having an issue? Only reason it seems odd is that only the PS3 has this problem for me (apparently I am not the only one with these speakers though). I will check it out though.

I will try that. I tried the optical setting before by itself and didnt work, maybe with the multi out.

Look at how many channels your game is encoded for? Digital cable is only good for 5.1 bandwidth if your game is 7.1 then you dont have the bandwidth there for it to work. Unplug the Z5500 and turn up the T.V. sound with just the HDMI cable if you hear sound then thats your problem. If that is the case, what is happening is the PS3 is sending the wider bandwidth 7.1 encode to the T.V. and the T.V. is not downmixing it to 5.1 for the lower bandwidth Digital cable.

Fiberoptic can handle 7.1 just fine. Regardless, I have updgraded to a Denon receiver and Boston Acoustics speakers for a true quality 5.1 system. No more problem. There is no game that would ever be made in only 7.1 and not support 5.1, 7.1 still isn't the mainstream nor is 9.1. The vast majority of homes use 5.1, anything beyond especially multiple subwoofers just are not common enough.
