[TH] Financial Analysts Say Intel Killed the Discrete Graphics Card

Thread Starter
I highly doubt that we'll see a massive decline of card sales because of the HD4K I thought Llano and Trinty were better anyway.

Intel has most certainly created some tension between integrated graphics, good-enough-graphics and discrete graphics cards with the introduction of Ivy Bridge.

The view of the financial community has been generally very positive, which is reflected in Intel's stock price that is currently trading in the $28 neighborhood and is hitting 7-year highs. With the past 12 months, Intel's market cap has increased from about $110 billion to about $142 billion.

The report also quotes industry analyst Jack Gold, who said that "extreme gamers who want very powerful graphics cards are in a niche market already, and it's shrinking." Gold continued and noted that Nvidia may be in trouble, "because their graphics chip market is falling off faster than their mobile chip market."

Idiot analyst is idiot.  Any PC gamer should and probably needs dedicated GPUs.  Gaming aside, the business world is really pushing multiple monitors for "more" productivity.  For the most part, the limitation isn't "performance" but functionality and I/O.

^True. Plus, 95 percent of users who buy computers with 3rd-gen i5/i7 probably are gamers anyway.

BF3 / D3 + Ivy bridge GPU = no

BF3 / D3 = massively popular + need for descreet GPU

Nothing really needs to be explained here because I used math sort-of.

I don't see how anyone can say this.

Discrete parts will always be better than their integrated counterparts, and for that reason alone there will always be a market for them.

The article brings up a good point. Most pc gamers even only want just enough hardware to let them play their games. HD4k and llano give just enough performance already. It seems quite natural that discrete graphics card sales would drop. If people can meet their needs with one part, why spend extra?

More importantly, OEMs are soon going to start marketing these APUs as entry level gaming machines. They will of course buy less entry level gaming cards as a result. Also, a significant chunk of discrete graphics card sales go to entry level graphics cards, like the 6450s and gt430s, ect, These APUs have better or equivalent performance to these cards by themselves. Naturally, the >100$ graphics segment is going to shrink or disappear.

Discrete graphics cards will never go away. However, APUs are continueing to become more powerful and more efficient. Games and gaming performance have been somewhat constant for years by comparison. Discrete graphics won't go away, but they will become less and less prominent.

Nvidia's biggest market must be integrated graphics in all those desktops and laptops sold by dell, hp, lenovo, etc. That market has completely disappeared.
